How to stop postman delivered, unaddressed junk mail?
I've written once to stop it, but it's still coming, and I've mislaid the address to write to - anyone know it? The stuff always goes straight in the recycling bin, but it still represents a lot of wasted energy and resources, and if they're going to start charging us.....

You can email to:

optout@royalmail.com.

Unfortunately the mailing preference service only covers addressed junk mail - not the stuff you get with your post from the postman.

Two addresses that should be helpful :

Put an end to junk mail by writing to:

Mail Preference Service
FREEPOST 22
London W1E 7EZ
0207 72913310

or

Door-to-door: (I think this is what you're talking about)

Royal Mail
Beaumont House
Sandy Lane West

believe it or not.. i had hackers in the past and receive mail from the postman, with my screen name and old address on it.. all my accounts now on the internet, will be fake..

Maud
most junk mail comes as a result of how we sign in when we first open an e-mail account. go back and uncheck most of the parts which required you to choose topics of interest. try that and let's see what happens

One way of dealing with it is to open the mail and return everything in the prepaid envelope back to the sending company. They have to pay for postage and for disposal.

I let it build up for a week or so and then give it to my kids. They love playing 'post office' and they're helping me.

Register you details with the Mail Preference Service, also recommend doing the same for your telephone number to reduce the number of cold calls you get. I recently bought my own place and was getting fed up with the number of trash mail that was coming through the door address to years of previous owners... I have to say, within 5 weeks the reduction in trash mail is obvious, I'm now happier picking the mail of the mat, as most of it is for me now! So less trash and better for the environment. These companies will just keep churning the stuff out until you get these other names removed from your address on their databases.

If you want to STOP spam dead, then you wont find a better free service than this one. I stumbled across this service just recently, I'm now using it and its Fantastic & I dont think I'll ever be able to live without it now, Yes! its that good. its free for x1 pop3 mail account (you can have other mail accounts but you would have to upgrade for mutiple accounts).

Please see http://www.0spam.com

The site itself contains all the instructions you will need, you will need to register and setup a free account before you can use the service. But once you do have a zero spam account, you can start using the service in just a few minutes.

I'd definately RATE 0Spam 10 out of 10 , definately the BEST free service of its kind you will ever find and it works brilliantly.

**TIP: from an old IT veteran, never ever write back to junk mail or spammers a) this just tells them your address is correct b) It tells the spammers your account is still active c) any junk mail will 99% of the time have a fake return to or from address anyway. So DONT waste your time, use zero spam service instead.

Re-address the items to Royal Mail Beaumont House Sandy Lane West Oxford OX4 6ZZ This will not stop it but it may have the Royal Mail rethink it's junk mail service!

sarah_roo03
a very good point.
not sure if it is unaddressed, but if it is addressed you can go through the mail preference service, similar to the telephone preference service.

fabric1601
well, i had the same problem with the junk mail, and I used one A4 paper size sheet on which i wrote NO JUNK MAIL PLEASE!!! and i've put that on my door, and of course they were still putting a junk mail but week after week it reduced and after a month or so it eventually stopped...

The Royal Mail are LEGALLY contracted/obligied to deliver a certain number of unaddressed junk mail each week.

The Preference Address does NOT work, we registered 10 years ago and getting MORE than ever. Just write 'NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS' on the envelope, put it back in the post and the sender has GOT to pick up the bill.

WavyD
If you live in the UK, then contact Royal Mail. If you request that they stop delivering unaddressed mail, then they have to stop. Search the net and you will find that a Royal Mail Postman got Removed from his post some months ago, for telling people just that!
Go ahead, everyone just do it. (Its total junk and they get revenue for it!)

You can register on line for mail, telephone calls and faxes.

Hope this helps :-)

G!
The Royal mail are within their rights to offer additional parts to their service, such as the delivery of a controlled volume of Advertising. If it were not for advertising, then they would have to increase Stamp prices (It could be £3 to post the letter that costs only 32p now).

You could try Mail Preference Service, as this might screen some of your mail out, http://www.mps.co.uk

If you do not want it, write "Return To Sender" on the envelope. I can speak from experience this idea cuts your junk volume right down.

There are some good answers above. I have registered with the mail preference service and also the royal mail unaddressed mail opt out. I get less junk mail now than I did but nothing you do will ever stop it completely (well, apart from sealing your letter box up and not allowing any mail!). The main problem with addressed junk mail is that the mail preference service is a service is not an entity devised on a legal standing - ie there is no law backing them up it is a purely voluntary code adopted by a lot of companies. Unfortunately the type of companies that send out most of the addressed junk mail haven't joined the service so don't abide by that code!
I find a great thing to vent your anger though is to get some of the junk mail that you get and stuff it into a large envelope to which you add some stuff out of your bin (teabags etc) maybe some stones and generally fill it with complete rubbish. I then address it to one of the junk mailers and put a return address on the reverse of one of the other junk mailers. I then stick a single second class stamp on it with the words 'receiver to pay' written across the top. I then post this knowing that the junk mailer will have to pay to get the package, they will open it to find loads of rubbish and when they investigate they will find a return address of another junk mailer, makes me smirk! I sent one that weighed nearly 2 kilo once which would have cost the recipient a fortune...oh dear!!!!!!

Re post return to sender or just
put all the junk mail back in the post box , let them sort it out they are getting paid to handle it, so let the PO handle it
LETS ALL DO IT
BUT MAKE SURE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS IS NOT ON THE ENVELOPE OR IT MIGHT COME BACK AGAIN.
Good luck

this is a problem that I'm passionate about. I get so much junk mail and I've even called talk radio to ask what I can do about it. I recall hearing about a website on the news but it was late at night and of course I don't remember. If I can find it I will let you know but try looking for it under news topics on network news on the internet.

callistoprime
This explains how to stop both types of junk mail for addressed and unaddressed mail, also the two addresses to use are on it...
