First of all, don't "spam" your site to a bunch of worthless directories - it won't help you, and in fact, it will probably get you a ton of spam. Let's be honest, there really is only one search engine that drives enough traffic to make your site successful, and that's Google.
You've probably heard about "Link Popularity" but Google also cares about "Link Reputation" - the quality of the sites linking to you. If you have nothing but garbage sites linking to you - Google will think that you are garbage as well. So watch the company that you keep.

I find submitting to directories very boring and tiresome without little return. In my opinion it's best to create quality content which people can't help but link to.
Maybe try creating some articles which can be redistributed by article directories would be a good start and if you can create anything unique and good enough for social bookmarking websites such as Digg you'll get loads of traffic and inbound links as a results. Try searching for linkbait to see what I mean!
