Contact all of your local pizza places and try to work out some type of combined target advertising.
A pizza discount with video rental.
A video discount with pizza reciept.
Offer a free rental to kids with all A's
Get them to hand out a flyer or something with all of their orders at the pizza place. Who doesn't like pizza and a movie.
Work out a discount for college students. Anything to draw them.
Get an ad in a local paper advertising these specials.
Get something printed on the back of reciepts at any local business.
Offer video renewal by phone. Just charge their account a renewal rate instead of a late fee if they call in before it's late. Like each extra day is just a $1.

A good way to get some people coming to the store would be to start a website if you dont already have one and get it ranked well in the search engines.
About 80% of ppl on the net find what there looking for by search engines. I have a friend who write a book on just how to do this i suggest you have a look.
One thing that a video store in my area does is advertise on local tv/radio but the main attention grabber is that every friday and saturday from 3pm to 7pm they host a "Happy hour" with free sodas and snacks (such as pizza, popcorn, buffalo wings, etc) for their customers to enjoy while they browse for their weekend entertainment. This is a great way to get the whole familly out of the house and make a simple errand into a fun treat for everyone. hope this helps!

Seperate yourself from the competition. Do a cool giveaway like a free popcorn with every video and advertise that in all your current ads and signage. Netflix can't do that.
Of course it has to be profitable to do it but those bags of microwave popcorn are pretty cheap.
Another great way is to use your current costumers as advocates for your business. Give them a rewards card when they rent a video and give them some for their friends.
