How would you build a strong brand ?

I'm both an academic reasercher aswell as corporate Brand consultant. So let me blend both in telling you wat it takes to build a strong Brand.

1) Define your Brand?

It means state its vision. Generally you can adapt a brand vision from corporate vision but not necessarily and never do it in case you have multiple Brands. Defining vision in the first place helps u in focusing a single path that is very much imp for the brand to be strong and not lost in the clutter.

2) Once having defined vision, you need to develop Brand Identity.
There are very few tools and techniques to chart out the better identity for the brand. I recommend you to use Jean Noels Kapferers Brand identity prisim to carry out this exercise. Do this execrcise massively becoz all the communications like advertising, PR, tradeshows etc... all should stem from Brand identity.

3)Develop a suitable Brand equity model and mesaurement techniques. Doing so will help you in developing the right associations that could be positioned appropriately in consumers minds. Brand equity just doesnt mean associations. it is composed of various elements like Brand awareness, Brand loyalty, perceived quality and other proprietary assets like patents, trademarks etc.... Developing a cirrect brand equity model helps in creating right marketing programs thus Marketing ROI would be greater. The measuremnt of Brand equity helps you to track where the Brand is in comaprison to competituve brands from time to times.

Doing these three steps with perfection will automatically put all you marketing efforts in sync and thus creates a strong brand

I do have 35 years experience in advertising. Most major brands such as Coke or Nike did it with a constant barrage of marketing using major media
includes TV, radio, newspaper, and magazines.
Of course you need a good product available to the masses. Great PR and spoke-people could only help the cause.
But, ultimately, branding is the result of position promotions and continuous advertising in good and bad times.
Clever TV and radio spots and celebrity endorsements will also help keep the brand fresh and in the news.
If one is on a limited budget, then do Internet blogging, write on-line articles, link to public sites like myspace and send out PR's.
