If it is a local store I would market it on Townlists.com. They are an up an coming city guide. They will purchase the key words for your company as well. They have only launched Virginia and California so far, but the other States will be live by the end of February. I like the ideas of local contests. Make sure you collect the names and addresses of all the entries to the contest to build yourself a list you can continue to market too. You may need the newspaper to help get the word out about the contest.
Do you have a store front? I know it sound basic, but banners always work well.

Try to hit all the big shows that come through town- bridal fairs, home shows, women's shows etc. and it wouldn't hurt to see if you can work with a high end hotel to offer your product to their clients
To push the organic angle try demos and displays at high end organic grocery stores near where you plan to set up shop. That may work with other businesses as well
Maybe an upscale coffee shop or tea salon would let you discretely offer their patrons the chance to try your products on the way in and find out where to buy them on the way out
And if none of that works, hook up with the wacky local DJ and wax some poor guy's back in a contest. People will remember you then. |

If your store is more local, then I would just stick to more inhouse marketing and local publications. Develop a good report with your customers and maintain a solid customer database. If you are not using a computer based POS system and usuing a simple register.... then throw that thing out the window and invest in a good computer pos system. They can track customer buying history etc. Your best bet will be to have a solid email marketing campaign. Try publishing a monthly newsletter promoting a healthier lifestyle, highlight products related to the articles. Offer a web coupon. Also take advantage of using space on your register receipts. If using a computer pos system you can have a coupon code at the bottom. You can also use "refer a friend" feature on your website or "forward this product info" to a friend, etc...
Zanox.com offers a cool service called paytip.. it gives people the opportunity to earn money by refering products to people. They only earn money if a sale is made. Another option, is start an affilaite program. Floppybank.com offer an affordable solution. If you have slightly larger budget and want to go global, contact zanox.com about their paytip, shop@, and search products. They may be able to work with even if you have a smaller budget.
Offer free samples as well and instore drawings. Do local press releases if you are having store events. Donate items / gift baskets to local charities.
Another solution... have frequent meetings with your staff to brainstorm ideas. You may have some hidden talent within your own team!

Someone provided a great answer on another question. Have a "Singing in the Shower" contest. You could do it during a time that American Idol (or some other popular singing TV contest) is airing. Bring in a fake shower (no water) and the showerhead would actually be a microphone. People will enter the shower and start singing into the mic. Ask the local TV station to cover it. |
