To work in advertising you need a degree. To be an art director you'll need an art degree and to be a copy writer you'll need an English degree. You could also do marketing which would translate well.
It is a massively competitive market with a high redundancy rate, so you need to have a degree and work late nights etc. to get ahead. It does pay very well though. |

Go to a college where they have marketing and advertising, get formal training, and then you'll be able to get a job in an advertising firm. College is the best place to start. |

Go to college and major in advertising and/or marketing. It's a really fun field to be in, but lots of hard work and long, unpredictable hours! |

Try an advertising agency. You can start at the bottom and work your way up. Also try writing books. If you have ideas, put them to paper. Good luck! |

Ad agencies wont even talk to you for a mail room job without some kind of "creative" experience. Try your local weekly free newspaper and prepare to be humiliated. Learn from the old ad dogs, don't flout your advertising degree, you'lll just embarrass yourself. Take crappy jobs like ad sales to small business, be ready to be "creative" with power mowers or truck tires...then you'l be ready to compete in that dirty dog's bed of a business called advertising. If you can run the gantlet, survive the trial by fire you will be ready. Its a great, high paying business but not for the faint hearted. Good luck. |

I'm a Copywriter at a marketing firm now. The easiest way to become a Copywriter, which isn't easy, is to go to a portfolio school where you create sample ads. These and these alone act as your resume and will get your first job. |

I noticed you mentioned you want "to earn a living" not "get a job."
Perhaps, you should consider free lance copywriting. With the explosion of products, merchants and web sites on the Internet there is a growing demand for quality writers.
How do you get started?
I'm not going to plug any courses or programs here, but there are many you can purchase online. Do a search for "copywriting courses."
See if there is anything to your liking and in your price range. Shop around and compare features. Be warned: You will be swayed! These folks make a living selling anything to anybody . They might even tell you can make $5000-$10,000 for writing one sales page. Not everyone has the "write stuff" to achieve those lofty paychecks but there is still a lot of elbow room to eke out a niche.
Do you have the patience to learn a new craft and study hard before you see a financial payoff?
Are you prepared to make mistakes and learn from them?
Are you really ready to work?
Whatever path you choose, any career choice is a long-term commitment.
It requires dedication and the humility to recognise that you don't have all the answers.
A few advertising professionals have been kind enough to answer your question. Take them seriously because they will be the first to say you can't just walk in off the street and expect to replace one of them. You must first master a craft. Everyone has ideas.
It also helps if you find a mentor. Model someone already successful in your chosen field.
And if they allow it - keep asking questions until you run out of breath! |
