As a former restaurant manager, I don't quite understand how you can't give away food. Leveraging your product is a fraction of the cost of spending actual money on advertising.
As stated above by many, "Customer Service" is the key.
1. Make sure you have plenty of staff at all times...if it gets slow, there is always cleaning to do. NEVER think you are making a profit by cutting hours. You are actually hindering your maximum operating potential. You must be prepared at a moments notice to handle an unexpected rush. You must have a pristine looking establishment. You must be prepared in every aspect of daily function at all times.
Every time you fail at any of these things, a handful of people walk away negative, and they like to tell people about it, and if your doing this on a daily basis...it is costing you thousands of dollars by years end.
2. Increase your daily average of "Tables Served" ...if you seat, say 85 tables in a day and each table brings in $25, you can see a great profit by just increasing 5 tables a day will bring you. You do this by increasing the pace of business. Get those tables cleaned off immediately, and get the next family seated.
3. Use large... I mean huge glasses so that patrons have plenty to drink...do not count on your servers to make timely refills. You do not want your patrons feeling like they have to ration their drink because they don't know when they'll see the waitress again.
4. Fix every customer complaint with a solution that the customer feels good about. If you fail to do this it will cost you a whole lot more than one meal. |

The best advertisement is what people say about your service, and the food. Also the atmosphere is important. When people come in be sure to tell them to tell their friends to come too! We drive to a little town that is 65 miles away because they have such nice atmosphere, candle light on each table and very nice music (recorded) playing in the background......we just feel so rejuvinated after we eat there!!!!!!! I would offer a buffet selection being different every night (italian,greek,mexican) whatever your kind of restaurant is. Very easy to do and would only be a couple of hours, say 5 pm to 7 pm. Of course you would have your regular menu but the people would be pouring in to see what you have to offer. You would probably be catering to the business crowd, which if they like the food, would be apt to bring back their clients.
As for advertising, you can print out small take out menus by a personal computer(cheap and creative) or make business card size calendars(everyone likes on for their wallet).

The most frequent way I used to try new restaurants is when they would fax a menu to the office. They'd usually offer a discount for a group lunch order or something along with it. If they offered free delivery, it was guaranteed we'd try it at least once! It's such a pain leaving work for lunch some days. |

Word of mouth has always been the best advertising. however if you are looking for more than that go up to the local high school. Normally they print out a calender or the football team posters and under the picture the have advertisements and usually arent that pricey. When Johnnie big shoulders takes his big poster home his mom is going to see you support his football team. Most parents see you support them they will start to frequent your place too. |

Unless you have a spectacular location, you are out of luck here. Most businesses put in their business plan advertising costs. The best thing you can do is buy some radio advertising on an AM radio station. That will likely be less expensive than FM radio. Choose a News-Talk and voice your own commercial: I'm John Johnson, owner of the Venetian Restaurant in downtown Cleveland. When you have a special occasion like an anniversary or birthday, come see me. Our specialty is Chicken Boursin.
