Mrs.Eve | I had a brilliant idea for a new product, a great invention. How do I get started? |
I thought about this product that involves high technology and the fashion industry. There's nothing like this in the market. I am afraid to just tell anyone about my idea and have it stolen. I don't have the ability to manufacture this product, I don't even have the money to do it. Now, I do have the name (it's an awesome name) and the exact idea of how it would work. I need to know who can help me get started and perhaps if a big company such as Apple or Microsoft would buy my idea and develop it from that point. Should I write it down and knock on their door on my own or what????? Help! Any ideas are welcome. |

Keep this to yourself for the time being. I know a Doctor who invented a mobile lab device that is cheap and would allow Doctors to conduct 90-95% of the lab work patients have done IN THEIR OFFICE. This would be quicker and cheaper and it's cost effective for Doctors to own. He made a big mistake and got a patent on his invention.
Most people are under the hallucination that a patent protects you from other people stealing your invention. Nothing could be more false. A patent only stops an honest person. You would have to be able to afford to hire attorneys to litigate against someone who infringed upon your patent rights.
Here's what I suggest: keep this to yourself for the time being. Put it in writing and start writing a business plan right now. You don't have to finish the plan but get started today.
I may be interested in helping you finance the operation so you can get off the ground. But the whole idea is to start your own business and start selling this product. Build the company up.
If it's worth anything at all, the competition will recognize that or the market will respond to your offer. If you want to sell out and let someone else take your product the best way to do it is to first build your own company and begin selling the product. It'll be worth more, to your bank account balance, once there have been sales and a market presence.
Not only that, but you'll learn more than most MBA students sitting in a classroom ever will. Experience counts. If you want some help, you'll know where to find me. |

It is difficult to make a great idea come to life. It takes a lot of time, money and resources - many brilliant ideas never come to life as a result. This does not mean you can't find someone to help you make your idea a reality.
The first thing you should do is write your idea down and document when you created the idea. You can pitch companies to buy your idea, or to invest in your idea if you do not have the money to do so yourself. To protect your idea you can have anyone you speak to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA). Try this one. This will help to protect your idea when you speak with potential companies and/or people who might be able to help.
Here is one I found online:

One thing I would do is sorta like a copyright. Write down all the details, a drawing, name, EVERYTHING you have about it....put it in an envelope and mail it to yourself! Don't open but put it aside. Safe Deposit Box would be good here! It gets a postmarked date and solidity of your idea in your ownership.
If you can, make a prototype.
Try to connect with someone in "Marketing and Development"....at the company you want to buyt it.
Patends office cost $$.....it takes a lot of diagraming and such!
Good Luck, maybe I'll say "I knew you WHEN....." |

First protect your idea .......... visit a patent attorney.
The rest I may be able to help you with. Depending on what it is I have extensive contacts with several types of manufacturing facilities primarily in China and South Africa. |

First of all, you don't want to sell it to some hot-shot, big company. They will act as if they made it on their own minds.
Instead use a small, local business to donate your idea to.
Once you find a fitting local business with enough dough to do the job, your product's test will begin. If it is truly good enough, word will spread about them, and soon you and the company that sold it will be famous.
However, do note that not all products are success stories. Even ideas that the big corporations use usually end up more in the failure list than the hit list.
Wish you luck! |
