File a provisional patent. It's cheaper and quicker than a full patent and it gives your idea legal precedent from the date of filing. You have to research pretty hard to make sure you're not filing a patent that's already been taken or is too close to one that has.
A provisional will give you time to research and develop, but you have to file a more expensive "full" patent eventually.
