If you have good content and you don't mind third party ads on your site, Google adsense is great IF you can get lots of traffic to click through their ads. It can be a little complicated for rookies to get through their set up process but once you figure it out, it can be very profitable. I would suggest that you read their adwords policy first before applying for google ads on your site.Until and unless you are not getting about 1000 visitors daily to your site don't go in for it.Don't advertise your site on Free Traffic Exchanges.
Google ads on your website do make you money but you have to have a very good flow of visitors to your site.

If you're talking about Google Adsence where they pay you every time somebody clicks on your ad. yes it's worthwhile but they have pretty strict rules and you need to follow them. The only allow you three ads per page. But they do have a great variety. I use them on my Web site.

The only drawback to them. is you have to monitor The adds and let them know which adds you don't want. They explain how you do this. you really don't want your competition advertising on your site. although some people do.
