If you have an idea for a product, you should keep pursuing it by looking for help from someone like the Small Business Administration or someone like that who can help pull your ideas together in a way that will be acceptable to a business.
If you have an idea for a commercial for someone else's product (i.e for Nike) then I would drop it until you get hire by an ad agency representing Nike and/or start your own agency after many years of experience. Companies are seldom open to hearing ideas from random people for a lot of reasons (here are two good ones): 1) legal reasons- you might sue them if they reject your idea and then come out with something similar- even if they truly were working on it already; 2) you don't know the communications strategy and marketing strategy for the company so you are not in a good position to provide them with any suggestions. Ads come out of a solid understanding of the brand, its objectives and strategies and then, way down the line, you can start thinking about the actual commercial; 3) ads are expensive to make and test - your "out of the blue idea" would probably be a change of direction for the company, so they are unlikely to embrace it since the downside of doing a bad ad is pretty significant.
So got get an education in business and/or advertising, work for an agency or as a brand manager, and then you will have input on such matters. And once you are there you will understand why your company doesn't accept random ideas (even if they might sound great at first). |

First, you should test this idea on you friends, relatives etc. to make sure it's not a complete crap. Then search through your local freelance copywriters online directory, and send them an offer - either giving them a right to use this idea for free or suggesting to split possible payment from the client in equal (ot not equal) shaes. In the second case you shouldn't sent the idea itself until you have a deal. I'm talking only about freelance copywriters because nobody from ad agencies would talk to you about this matter. So no harm trying, anyway. |

I am a firm believer in research it dont have to be expensive, you can do a personal mail drops or e-mails or ask people around your office, friends, relatives and ask for their honest opinion.
This will narrow down items such as
> Who is your target market
> Who would use such products
> In which country should I market this and etc.
Then you will be able to search for a suitable candidate to target to / sell to. |

You should raise some money, film it, and slap it on YouTube. You should THEN simultaneously e-mail the company (e.g. a marketing coordinator) and let them know what you're up to so you don't get sued.
The company will love the free advertising from an enthusiastic consumer--they probably won't pay you at all--but you can build a killer reel with it, if all goes according to plan. |

Don't let QandAguy spoil your fun. There are a few people in the ad world that do just spec. That is they build speculative ads and try to sell them to companies. If they are a good ideas they might sell. If they are a great ideas they might sell. If they are the best ideas in the world they might sell.
But here is the deal. Advertising is a business that is always looking for new and exciting ways to do things. Fresh ideas are the lifeblood. Idea is King. If you have the right idea, go for it.
First get together a student writer and art director. You can screen them if you like. Put a posting on a local classified board. Develop your commercial idea to the fullest possible extent before pitching it.
Try to sell it to the agency that does the current work for the company. You can find them in the 'red book' at your local library. If they snub you (and they probably will) go straight to the company. If they snub you put it into a portfolio and save it, then start the process over again with a new product.
Eventually you will have whats called an advertising book. If it's good enough, you will get hired to tell companies what they should do to advertise. You should know though, the idea you present and what goes out in the end will rarely be the same.
That being left aside, the trick is to be able to come up with these ideas for anyone or anything. I had an instructor once. He is a freelancer. He gets hired by the big agencies to do the big commercials. He works specifically for no one. But if you've seen a fed ex commercial you've seen his stuff. He is a n idea man and he's paid for his ideas, and the agencies pay him.
So go for it. You will probably fail to sell your idea, but you will learn form the experience, and you might just succeed. |
