Visitors come to your site from following sources:

1) they find you: for this reason, you need to optimise your site for search engines. Blogs are the most straightforward way for this - I looked into SEO about 2 years into my blog project, only to find out that 90% of what needed done had already been done by the blog software

2) they like you: visitors who like your site can be your best evangelists. They link to your site, spread the link to friends, ... Make sure your partners, friends, associates ... link to your site, but only if the content is relevant

3) repeat visitors: either the modern way (through rss), or the old fashioned way (through e-mail), have a mechanism to build relations with your users

4) your own site: not only visitors matter - page views are equally important. I'd rather have 1,000 visitors viewing 5 pages each, than 5,000 visitors viewing one.

5) advertising: can be effective to build a web brand, but only if you have deep pockets

There is no quick fix. Traffic build up gradually over time, unless you have a scoop. Quality content helps, as it tends to be linked more from other sources. Regular posting helps - I notice more traffic on a day when I post, than on a day where I don't.

Finally, 'the long tail' applies to websites. If you have a few thousand articles on site, well indexed in the search engines, each will continue to acquire a few visits per week, and your traffic progresses steadily but surely.

The only way to get your site in the top search engines results without PPC (pay per click) is via search engine optimization

The search engine optimization techniques are so important because the best kind of website traffic by far is going to be search engine traffic.

This type of traffic is traffic who is highly targeted and because of that not only are they going to be interested in reading what you have to say but they are also going to be more interested in buying whatever you have to offer.

One, don't use people that promise you x number of visits. Even if they provided traffic to you, it wouldn't be worthwhile traffic and may get you blacklisted from important SE's like Google. Additionally, $40 in advertising really won't get you very far. If you are running a business, you need to look at options such as a true SEO company to analyze your site and make the necessary improvements. A good SEO will not be $40, however, and will likely require an investment of $4000 or greater. Their knowledge is worth that much to you.

I'm afraid it takes time.
I can't tell you if your content is the problem cos I don't know your website but certainly, adding excellent content, a little each week, will eventually get you traffic.

Buying traffic can be successful but really, it is a tactic best left to wealthy sales websites, because it takes a lot of money to get a lot of traffic. Also, once you stop paying, people stop coming and this is the real problem.

The best idea is to add excellent content. Hire a writer if needs be http://www.website-copy-writer.com

Then work on building links into your site from related and highly trafficked websites. Submit site to directories and write lots of articles, submitting them to article directory sites.
It takes time but you will get there. You need to put the work in,

You can create a blog about your website, post to it regularly (daily if possible) and join one of the Social Bookmarking sites like MyBlogLog or BlogCatalog. Then get busy in them making lots of contacts with other bloggers.

You'll be surprised how quickly your traffic starts to increase to your blog and from there to your website.

Write articles about the theme of your website and submit them to ezines like ezinearticles.com for free. Put a link to your website in your resource box and you'll also gain a backlink for each article - google likes this form of off-site SEO.

Create a squidoo lens about your website and write lots of content for that linking back to your website.

All the above methods are FREE ways of generating not just any old traffic but highly targeted traffic to your website which will result in more sales (assuming you are using your website to sell stuff!).

Simple - You either pay for it through PPC advertising eg Google or use the free methods such as article marketing.

You're wasting your time trying to buy traffic because it is usually rubbish.

Hope this helps

The most effective way to advertise on the Internet is
to first set up a website and publish its domain name
on major search directories such as Google.com,
Yahoo.com [at http://www.google.com/addurl/?...... and
MSN.com since 85% of Internet shoppers rely on these
search directories to provide them with goods and
services. In a sense, these search directories are a
very large Internet Yellow Pages.

Nevertheless, should your website or opening webpage
fail to contain "generic" keywords, then anyone using
such "generic" queries will not be able to discover
your website. Your domain name [URL] of your website,
in a sense, will be invisible, undiscoverable.

You may want to consider some simple algorithms which,
when observed and committed in designing of a website
with placement of various critical metatags that can
surely achieve a high search engine presence and
increase Internet traffic to your website. These
metatag strategies work well with published webpages
at Google and Yahoo.

Design: Should you create an extensive Flash-based
website, make sure to fill-in the property entries
such as the Title, Description and Keywords. Failing
to do so, leaves no hard HTML or ALT resource that can
be readily indexed by search robots. Also consider the
Internet audience and their incoming setup. For
example, if they are on analog/dialup, Flash webpages
take too long to load up and therefore analog users
will likely lose interest and discontinue entering the
Flash site. On the other hand, anyone on hi-speed DSL
lines, will welcome Flash pages which load quickly. So
before designing a pure Flash websitge, ask the simple
question, "Who's my end user - is he on dialup or
DSL?" And if you had to choose between these two users
for maximum marketability, then select analog users
since 80% of most resident users are still analog
Internet subscribers and pure HTML designed webpages
is best for them.

A non-Flash-based website which relies on hard text,
is far easier to be indexed by search robots. Limit
the use of stylized text saved as .gifs since as a
graphic, they are not indexable by search robots.

Avoid use of frames since any number of search robots
are unable to properly classify textual material.

Placement of Metatags:

A ranking or search order does take place with Google
and Yahoo and it begins with the "Title" metag which
should consist of no more than 65 characters separated
by commas. The "Title" should describe in generic
terms, the goods and services, followed by a location
from which the resource is located, i.e., city, state.
The placement of a domain name which is not generic
within the "Title" is not appropriate, unless your
domain name is a major recognizable brand name.

The second metatag is the "Description" which is
usually 25-30 words to form a complete sentence which
best describes one's goods and services.

And the very last category - "Keywords" are also
somewhat limited to 15-16 words which can be plural
and compound in nature. Again, avoid multiple entries
which could be mistaken as "spamdexed entries" which
is defined as the loading, and submission of
repetitive words into a particular metatag category.
"Spamdexing" when discovered on a webpage and reported
to Google's spamreport.com can result in the
elimination of your website from their search
directory.

Here's an example of a very highly-placed website on
Google.com: Begin with the very "generic" search query
"sandwiches downtown los angeles," taking note to not
abbreviate Los Angeles to "LA" and of course, leave
out the parentheses ("). It will bring up some 2.4
million+ search results. Check out where "Nazos.net"
is ranked. It's on the SECOND FRONT [ranked 15]!
Again, Nazos.net's high web presence was achieved by
proper web design and placement of relevant metatags
according to Google's publication guidelines.

Good luck!
