Well there are several things you can do to increase your exposure through this process.
First, rather than just creating a back link to your site on each page, consider building an additional page within their site that carries more information about your business that in turn will link back to your site. Then you can build several anchor tags on the page that link to you. As their site increases exposure and becomes more relevant your page within their site will go up in value as well and will give your back links more credibility.
Next, you should create an entire section on your website dedicated to theirs. Discuss everything you did in designing their site in pain staking detail. this will allow people looking for them to find you among the list as well. The sooner you can do this the better as age is one of the factors that search engines consider when indexing and ranking sites.
The other thing you may want to consider is that instead of doing the same old same old (Site designed by blah blah blah) is to put some marketing into it. If you tell everyone who designed it and they know nothing about you, there will be no interest and the likelihood of them visiting your site will show that. Depending on the site, consider something more like "Do you know who designed this site?" or "Come on, Click me, I Dare You". Just make sure you don't put anything on there that will upset your client.
When we did this for several of our clients we were surprised at how different the response was and the increase in business was noticed.

Sitewide Footer links are the most common method. If your main concern is driving traffic and exposure, then that's what I'd go with.
On the other hand, if you're looking for the SEO benefit, then place it on the page which is likely to receive the most PageRank - probably the homepage - but not on the other pages. You may want to consider placing it elsewhere (header, sidebar, etc.) as the Footer would yield the least amount of authority.
Make sure to clear it with your liaison prior to adding in your own link, though. Sometimes it's best to add it as a stipulation in the contract. |

Blog about it. Link to the site through your blog. Set up a MySpace page for the artist. Upload music and videos to all the other social networking sites, as well. Set up a twitter account for the artist. Link twitter subscriptions for the artist through your blog. Email everyone you know and ask them to take a look at your blog, the MySpace page, listen to the music, and watch the video. Email the music to your friends. Send them a new piece of music every two or three weeks. Include a link to the website in every email you send. |

Site's with good Back links usually attracts search engines, back links helps the site rank in search engine. But keep in mind that good quality back links are more important compared to many but low quality back links. One good way to gain traffic is having fresh content on your website. SEO can also help your website gain traffic.
