First, there are three terms people use to describe overlapping services - SEO, SEM, and link building.
Search engine optimization is typically described as the process of making a site as search engine friendly and crawler-accessible as possible. Of course, this also includes optimizing internal link structure, keyword density, code structure, etc. SEO is still important, but it's coming into its twilight for three reasons:
1) More and more site owners have become educated about search engine friendly design.
2) Many new sites run on content management systems which already have SEF design implemented.
3) Google's algorithm is placing an ever increasing emphasis on links. In competitive niches, even poorly optimized sites with strong link authority will outperform heavily optimized sites with little or no inbound links.
So, on-site SEO is still important, but it's not the future of SEO by any means.
The future is link building - in particular, link building through social media and bookmarking arenas like blogs and bookmarking sites. SEO is moving away from its technical roots, and into a more traditional "marketing" type service, where the most successful sites are those who manage to secure the most and the highest quality inbound links.
Search Engine Marketing/SEM is typically described as managing of pay per click campaigns. That's another thing that is going to continue to be in demand.
Personally, I enjoy the challenge of organic rank building, and I have never done PPC advertising for any of my sites or clients. I won't say it's a waste of money, but people pay attention to the natural listings - that's where the real action is.
If you want to be successful in this field, learn how to build quality links from sites related to your clients, and learn to generate buzz through social media and bookmarking. Another important skill is linkbaiting - helping your clients create useful content that draws traffic and links from their niche.
Anyone can do on-site optimization, and in the future, that service will be even cheaper and more competitive - not to mention the fact that it will matter less and less to site owners who want real results in competitive niches.
By mastering the link building techniques I described above, you can continue to stay on top of the industry, be in demand, and be paid well.

It will all depend on the search engines. SEO is getting harder and harder nowadays. Many niches have high competition and folks are running such web sites for years. It's hard for newcomers to beat the old and trusted rankings, however, nothing is impossible as long as you work hard the results will come. |

To be honest with you nobody knows the future of SEO. this industry is constantly getting tweaked and everyone in this industry has to tweak their business model a bit to keep up with it. Online strength is only growing. i don't think we have seen its full potential just yet so I think it is only on the nose end.

SEO is in it's infancy. It has massive growth for at least the next 5 years. Kind of like attorneys though there are lots of them out there, but not very many good ones. Phone books become more irrelevant every day, and where do you go to get that info?
There are billion dollar companies out there without meta data (basic seo), so don't let anyone convince you the market is saturated. It's in infancy. |

There are currently 1 billion web sites on line and all of them are trying to capture the attention of the big three search engines: Google, Yahoo and Inktomi.
As an SEO, you'd be optimizing some of these sites for search engine bots but here's the thing - the importance of SEO is diminishing all the time.
A site visitor is more likely to find your site through a link than through organic search engine results. The usefulness of search engines is low except for those links that appear on the first page or two of the SERPs.
Consider search engine marketing instead of search engine optimization. SEM is designed to attract people. SEO is designed to attract letter-string-gobbling Googlebots.
The differences between SEO and SEM will only grow in the future.
Good luck with your choice,

I disagree with the above post, I think search engines will always play a massive role in finding online content. How many people do you think actually look on the 'links' page of a website, they just go to Google and type in what they want.
However, they way we are using search engines is changing, we are using more specific searches to find what we want.
Its a very exciting industry and I cant wait to see what the next big thing is. |
