I am thinking about setting up an online business and also selling at different events that coincide with my selected products. It will be mainly "gift-type" merchandise.
Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to get started, ideas on marketing, search engines,where to buy products, etc. Will I need a license and how hard is it to set up a website? It's all so overwhelming! I don't want to do Ebay--so overdone!
Also, does anyone have any success or failure stories about themselves or others that they'd want to share?

There is a reason ebay is over-done though :)
Regardless, it's not too hard to set up a site. A bit more difficult to add a shopping cart though (you'd also have to figure out how to be able to accept credit cards)
Then you have marketing to actually get people to buy what you sell. Lastly you have a logistics problem of how to deliver your merchandise to buyers. |

I have attended the Gift Show at the Merchandise Mart in Atlanta and Chicago. Huge shows where vendors offer their merchandise. Many of the vendors will not sell to retailers who do not have a "brick and mortar" store. No matter what your business, in order to buy merchandise you will need a vendors license/business license and a tax ID number. You can teach yourself to set up a website, but remember a more professional looking one will work better. Yes, ebay or etsy is overdone, but it's a great way to find out if your merchandise will move. |
