Depending on the type of business, you could advertise with the free weekly papers. Also from personnel experience cable tv advertising : I advertise with comcast on Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, and Sci-Fi. The cable provider in your area lets you pick which channels and at what times your ad can be shown. Each channel and when it airs affects the cost per 30 second spot. If your on a budget, try after midnight... some of the above channels charge less than $10 per spot, but like I said its after midnight.
Hand out flyers at local events. If I know more about about your business I might have other suggestions. |

hmm.. it depends on the business' scale and sort. I.e. who your target audience is (aiming at) and where you will be likely to reach them via advertising.
It is said that the most powerful and effective form of advertising is free. It's called 'word of mouth'! However, this is not always simple to achieve straight off, and some other forms of advertising are needed to raise awareness.
'FREE' advertising sounds great, yet you'll find that it often is not any where near as effective as advertising where you need to pay even a small fee.
Depeinding on the size of the audience, try:
Posters
Websites
Local Newspaper Ads (pretty cheap)
Radio (not so cheap for a new business)
I reccomend you research marketing for the business - it could be one of the most important parts of its success. You'll find plenty of sources of knowledge such as books and internet. Give just a little bit of your time to familiarize yourself with the world of marketing, and it will go a long way!
