Referalls are the largest source of incoming business that you can get. You really need to target your sphere of influence first (family, friends, people who know you and like you). It takes at least 3 times contacting someone-whether it be mailings, phone calls, emails...studies show that even those that are friends with you won't get that miraculous click in their head that you actually do work and would like business from them and that they can refer you without being reminded about 3 times.
Also, another great place to target is real estate firms. Realtor's always need people for jobs like this, so market to them as well. Drop off some cardsbrochures and some food, candy, or anything yummy to some real estate firms near you to make them aware of your business. Once you get one person in an office to use you, they will probably recommend you to any who need your services if you do a good job.
http://www.craigslist.com is a good one to advertise on that's free, if you have done work for someone that would be willing to submit you on http://www.angieslist.com then you should get them to do that. Angie's list is a place where a great number of people go to find businesses like you to call. But you can't join it and put yourself in their database-someone else has to.
Yellow Pages are also proven to be a good place to get your name out there, try it once at least, if it doesn't work then don't advertise in it again.
That's just a few places I could think of off the top of my head. Best of luck with your business and just remember, stay in touch with people you have done business with, try to contact them somehow, at least once a month or every couple of months to remind them that you want their business and their friends and families business. |

I would suggest you talk to local landscaping companies... ones that maybe do upkeep or even put yards in... but don't handle trees.You could also talk to local nurseries... and companies that provide bark and other decorative stuff for yards. Ask if they have a bulletin board to put up a fly or cards. I would also send a letter to all of your customers, with a couple of your business cards, and explain that you are trying to build your business... would they pass your card along if they have a friend who has a need. Lastly - I imagine you know what a diseased tree looks like - you might want to drive around some neighborhoods you've done work in, and if you see a problem - bring it to the attnetion of the owner, mention the other work you did inthe neighborhood, and offer a quote on the spot. |

Yahoo has an online yellow pages ad that is free,
you can put tear sheets around town like at the local grocery store bulletin board. If you have business cards, you can leave them at other businesses, like the local coffee shop or diner.
You can make flyers and place them on windshields in parking lots, or hang them on doors in your neighborhood |

Since recommendations play a big part in driving businesses such as yours....do you have a customer who can recommend your business? Add this link to your card and let your customers words work to bring you more business.
As the database grows...you get traffic directed to your listing and category....as customers look for recommended businesses. Recommendations are the best form of ads arent they? If you already have a website you can include the links to the same once you have been listed thus driving hot leads to your site.
