Most affiliates have blogs and websites, but you don't even need one to get started, you could create a squidoo lens to promote your affiliate products.

It depends on what you want to promote. My site is about solar power and I have produced many pages about different topics.

The advantage of a website is that you can generate tons of different pages and each page can target a different search term. That way you can cast a very wide net and pick up heaps of traffic even in a competitive niche.

Solar is a massive subject, but by choosing my search terms correctly for my many pages, I have been able to drive my home page up to an average ranking of 18 for that term, which means it appears on the front page of Google results for that term and even for many other terms that are related to it.

In my opinion the pulling power of a website is much greater than that of a blog.

Have a look at my site if you like (the link is at the bottom). When you get to a new page, right click in the body of the page and select "View Page Summary". Here you will see the keywords I am targeting in with that page. You'll also see that each page (almost) has a different major search term.

Only the first seach keyword has any weighting; the extra ones are just a little bit of insurance. Using many pages, I can cover TONS of different specific searches and get good traffic, which is what you want for selling.

I've been at it for 6 weeks and not only is the site looking good, traffic is up to 60+ unique visitors per day. I'm getting there.

Also, with a dedicated site, you can apply to specific affiliate programs of companies that sell stuff you are focusing on.

This is not the Get Rich Quick approach, but I bought one of those GRQ offerings just to see what was in it. All it said was "find something people really want and sell it to them". DUH. I already knew that. I was the one who was the patsy there.

Unless you want to GRQ selling GRQ promises to other people, I reckon the website is the way forward.
