G-man | I want to set up a website. What's the best way to do this? Hire a professional or buy a software package? |

If you are trying to sell something (yourself, your ideas, or your business) whether or not that includes e-commerce (an online store), you should hire a professional. If you wanted to start up a store selling merchandise in a shopping center, you wouldn't want to try building the store would you -- in that case, you'd want to focus on how best to position your business to sell products and/or services (leaving the storefront to a company that handles construction work). |

If you don't have any experience, you will probably just get frustrated trying to diy-it. If you have the funds, you should hire a pro. |

You can hire a professional if you can afford it, but as a beginner, i suggest that you start by doing it yourself first. there are thousands of free hosting sites that you can start with freeewebs.com is definitely my pick. and if you want cheap hosting, you can use this site http://www.freewebs.com/millioniare/cheapwebhosting.htm |

Hiring a professional is the best. |

if your website is selling products and needs to be scure and attractive then hire a pro. Other wise it is easy to make one with programs like macromedia. |

It's not hard to do and you get better the more you work at it. SBC Yahoo Small Business has some very easy to use tools that will help. You don't have to know code. If you are looking for ideas on setting up your business, I found this site that has some good information that may help.
Good luck. |

I think it all depends on what you want to do with the website. If it's purely informational, you can probably hire a professional to do a few pages for a reasonable price, but you could also get away with a template site.
I don't recommend trying to do it yourself unless you have a good enough of an eye for graphics and marketing so that you don't make an amateur-ish site. Also, you have to be willing to invest the time in researching your market and learning some elements of HTML, because prepackaged software can add so much bulky code that it is a good idea to learn how to trim it to the essential code.
For a robust e-commerce site, I recommend hiring a firm to design your look and feel of your site that can also translate the design into functional code that can be used on multiple platforms and screen resolutions. That is the tricky part and why they are paid the big bucks. Then I would bundle that with a back-end content management system and an ecommerce solution for true customer service. All three of these elements could come from the same firm, but sometimes you can get them from different places and integrate them. |

Just depends, you could go to templatemonster.com and buy a template to the type of website you want and make it yourself. If you want an interactive website you need to know server side programming so i would suggest hiring someone. If you just want basic content you could easily add that yourself with frontpage or similar software. |

I run about 14 websites right now and I did 10 of them myself. Like others have said, if you know how to do it yourself or aren't afraid of getting frustrated and pulling your hair out, then by all means, do it yourself. Web design is a talent that is very valuable nowdays.
If you're looking to get a professional website, you can get the best of both worlds. The last 2 websites I got setup were done by Valueweb.com. Only cost me 49.95 per month and they design the site and maintain it for me. With so many sites to take care of during my weekends, it was starting to get hectic.
The guy I spoke with was really nice and was able to explain their options to me without me getting confused at all. If you want his # just let me know and I'll email it to you.

Ok, for a real answer. First you need a domain name. This is how people will find/know your site i.e www.yahoo.com Second, you need a web hosting company. This is a company that will store all your files on the net, per say. Thrid, you need to design a website. You can use a template. If you do this you will need additional software to edit the template, this can get costly. So if you have no desire to do the following then hire a company/person to do it for you. You will spend from 299 to 20,000 depending on what your needs are. email if you need more info. |
