Find out the agency that has their account, call the main line and ask for someone in production and find out which writers are on that account, and get their email address and send it to them.
They probably wouldn't be able to tell you why they can't use it, because it will reflect the client's marketing direction. But if it is funny, chances are it won't synch with the targeted market (i.e. people afraid of getting viruses on their computers).
Better yet, make a rough version and youtube it. Then you'll get credit for your stroke of genius. I know two guys who got hired for a liquor company that way. |

I've worked in advertising for over 15 years. Here's what I think...
First off, don't send ANYTHING to Customer Service. They'll be of absolutely no help to you.
Second, if you want to contact the maker of the product (Symantec) you'll need to know where they are located:
World Headquarters

A phone number wouldn't hurt...800.441.7234 or 541.334.6054
You should also know where to start...who to ask for...etc. I'd start by calling the 541 phone number and ask for Janice Chaffin's office. Janice is the Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer for Symantec. She's not the right person to get in touch with, but she'll tell you who is if you can get her on the phone. See her profile information below...it can't hurt to brush up.
You MIGHT be better off sending a video of your rough version of the commercial to her at the World Headquarters Office. Chances are slim you'll reach her directly by phone, though her secretary should be able to point you in the right direction. Don't give up too early...keep calling whoever the secretary suggests until they give you another name...then call them until you get to someone (very possibly at their advertising agency) who will talk to you about your idea.
Finally, be prepared to be ignored...to have your idea shot down...to have your idea stolen...etc. I'd STRONGLY recommend writing your idea out or making a video of it and mail it to YOURSELF via Registered Mail...and never open it. This way you have proof that you hatched the idea before they came up with it "themselves"...just in case. When you send them anything, send it Registered Mail and make sure you get notification when it's received. Save that as well...just in case.

An advertising IDEA is very sacred! you should never ever trust it to anyone even to the company the ad is intended to.
Put it first in paper.
Use the Integrated Marketing Communication plan.
Identify the product, it's category and the present situation that your IDEA (AD) will help resolve.
Call the Marketing Department of that company and tell them that you have an idea/proposal for an ad campaign.
set an appointment, be prepared, make a STORY BOARD for TV, or the script for radio, and the Sketch or graphic design for the Print.
tell them why you created this and how it will be EFFECTIVE to catch their target markets and MAKE A SELL.
-Always make sure that every paper you sent to them must have a received copy, so that in case they use your idea and you are not paid nor credited, you have evidence that the idea comes from yours. |

The above YouTube idea is a good one, although you could get into trouble if you use the Norton logo or brands.
However, the reason the company and their ad agency won't get back to you is because you are attempting to send them an idea unsolicited. It's their way of staying safe from a lawsuit. If you can get to a higher-up at their ad agency, you might be able to pitch the idea to them.
But, NEVER GIVE AWAY your idea or tell an underling about it. That's the surest way for it to be stolen.
Copyright the idea on paper, and go from there. |
