If advertisers were suddenly banned world wide from using sex to sell, how would they advertise?
and would this be a better world?

Oh Gee, they would have to sell the product which they want you to buy.

Yes it would be a better world.

Hopefully with a greater degree of honesty that simply focused upon the merits of the product or service being advertised. And with more respect for the target audience.

I can't say that this would make our world a better place, but it would certainly reduce the "stupidity quotient" of what we all deal with on a daily basis.

Advertise in plain language and use the core competence of the product.

Using sex in advertisement is already confined to meet some lax codes concerning its explicitness in the US. In many countries especially in those with strictly religious governments it is illegal even to refer to the sexual matters publicly anywhere even in the books, movies, and theatre. I have experienced living in such asexual places and believe me it is intolerable. Sexuality for human is like salt and pepper for food. It should not be too little nor should it be too much.
The problem with the advertisements is greater than only abusing sexuality. In the field of advertisements the costs and quantities are burgeoning exorbitantly while the qualities are becoming cheaper every day. I think that their problem is that they are almost everywhere: in the TV, movies, newspapers, magazines, streets, roads, buildings, websites, e-mails, and in the case of sport events and Celebes almost on every item that can be viewed. And they are not direct anymore. The effect of indirect advertisement which is penetrating to our privacy from everywhere is very negative. I suggest that we have occasions, places, TV channels, events, and etc. in which ads have to meet strict standards about their being direct, informative, and honest. People will eventually find it more convenient and effective to use this kind of media other than the contemporary media that is almost consisted of ads instead of useful information. This must be done voluntarily because banning is never the solution in the long run.

How could you possibly ban sex from advertising? Forbid advertisers from using a pretty woman or handsome man in any advertising? Forbid swimsuits unless you are a swimsuit manufacturer?

The use of sex to sell can range from the subtle and thoughtful (which I think is pretty awesome, by the way) to the explicit and raunchy (which is usually just disgusting). But where do you draw the legal line?

I believe full frontal nudity is over the line, as is exposure of sexual organs, but outside of that, I'm not sure there is a line that most would agree on.

If we could find that line, and enforce it, I think it would be a better world. Morality is a helpful virtue.

I don't think Microsoft is selling their products using, '~'. Their products are selling very well. There are many examples of decent and good advertisements free of '~'.

Advertisement can be funny, creative and so on. There are many good movies (as a product) like 'Lord of the Ring' they sell themselves because of a good story, technical and creative presentation, animation and so on but still unnecessarily, '~' is quite often chipped-in in many of them. It is a botheration. Yes, world would definitely be a better place.

Products are sold at the right combination of elements of marketing mix. There are theories such as 4P's or 4C's or 7C's and so on. Creativity will thrive if '~' is banned from advertisements.

The aim of an advertiser is to convey a compelling and appealing message to potential customers which should entice them to purchase the product that is being advertised. Were any particular strategy to be banned then advertisers would simply find an alternative.

Know that advertisers follow the prevalent vogue. Right now, sex is just that. Nevertheless, there are several other ways to create an appealing ad as well. As obvious, there are some products where using sex in their advertising campaigns would not compel any potential buyers, it would repel them. You could think of a few.

Well, I understand you are probably referring to those products where using sex in ads does work, eg. music and fashion products. If advertisers were banned from using sex they could (and do) appeal to other sentiments such as freedom, unity, peace, spirituality, intellectual enlightenment, courage, honor, benevolence, etc.

As to whether the absence of sex in ad campaigns could make the world better, one could argue in the affirmative. Recent research shows that the average human being is inundated with adverts, seeing at least 500 ads/day. If more of these ads relayed messages with such overtones as some of the sentiments listed above, then it can well be argued that this would have a more positive effect on the world than the proliferation of sex images.
