First research to see if anyone has done it before.
The patent office is expensive. To find out if something is already patented you could be looking at a patent lawyer that charges $350 an hour.

Before you go running off thinking you will be rich I would consider how feasible it would be for this product to thrive in the market.

There are millions of products and not all are big sellers.

The first thing I would do is make a prototype so you can show people.
Once you have solid working one, before you show it to companies that may be interested , you can both sign a non-disclosure form so that both sides are protected and they can't steal your idea.

there is always a risk involved.

Research the idea fully, then you could either approach a company that deals with a similar product or go it alone. It is said that invention is 99% perspiration 1% inspiration

Wow! You will need to register it and patent it so that your idea will not be copied. But be warned, patenting takes years to process and it is not wise to publicize about your item before it is fully registered.
