Advertising to increase exposure on niche sites and hight traffic portals. Getting clickthroughs requires that thought actually be placed in the ads, the same way you would have to market a design, its also important to market a website.
PR to tell the world and the media to take notice and look at something special that you are promoting for the company.
LinkBaiting would be a smart idea in the campaigns above as well as utilizing social networks and sites like Yahoo! answers and digg. You need to use all teeth and there's as much traffic on digg and Yahoo answers as any Google search.

It really depends on whom you are marketing for. Remember that Ads and PR are each only portions of what marketing is all about.
For example, a small mom and pop hardware store known for helping the community might portray ads focusing on the positive PR, but the primary focus would be Ads to improve their sales, and thus keep them competitive with ACE or Home Depot.
However, on the flip side, a company like Walmart who has plenty of exposure, which unfortunately tends to be negative would want more focus on PR in order to positively influence the perception many have of them. |

That question is entirely dependent on the product or service you are trying to promote.
PR is moving more and more toward the pseudo-news writing.
This is something that if done well, works great for drug companies. It ain't going to do squat for kelloggs Corn Flakes.
With Public Relations, I like the definition "Building Public Relationships."
For me, that definition points you in the direction where PR will have the most effect.
But without turning this into a PR class lecture, as a marketer, it's one more tool in your arsenal. It's up to the marketer to know when it's the appropriate tactic, and when an advertising platform makes more sense. And sometimes, it's even a combination of the two. |
