When at all possible, call your customers by their names. "And how is your little daughter, Susie?" will go a long way to creating loyalty. Little personal touches like photos on display. Other, more specific ideas would depend on what your business is. If its a hardware place, encourage customers to bring in before & after photos of their projects for your bulletin board. If it's a cooking store or groceries store, have a place for people to post recipes, especially for a spotlighted item. Anything to create a repore (sp?) between you and the customers.
And, of course, CUSTOMER SERVICE! Help them decide between two colors for painting their bedroom. Special order what they need. Try to carry a unique product WalMart wouldn't waste shelf space for. Take the time to teach them to use an item.
And keep prices low, especially on the big items. Then push the little assesories. "Don't forget the batteries. This calls for 4 AAA." |

you have to leverage yourself against larger enterprises.
Small businesses have alot going for them, look into maybe co advertising with other small businesses, use special promotions to draw in customers, make your existing customers know they're wanted.

Not knowing anything about your business makes it a little harder to respond, but refocus your business on niches that don't compete directly with Walmart. Some niches will be higher end products, hard to find/rare products, repair/warranty services, business to business, value added services (installation, training, etc.), drive thru service, etc. The best way to compete with walmart is to not compete. |

You have two choices, sell out and cut your losses or stay and fight it out. For sure you will need outstanding customer service. Walmart may be cheap, but they are very impersonnal, despite their advertising to the contrary. You need to make each of your customers feel like family. You can also do your best to be local market focused, goods and services that are most important to your local area. Best of luck, which ever way you go. |

Customer service is key in fighting against Wal-Mart. You will also have to engage in the community. Sponsor a youth sports team, provide a nominal scholarship to the local high school. The personal touch will make the difference. You will not be able to compete on price alone. |

Determine what positive things differentiate you from Wal Mart and then leverage that into a retention and refferal program for your existing customers. IE. you visit my store and earn either points or frequent usage cards that they can trade in for product and services. Additionally they can gain point for turning people onto your store. What you willf find is that if people have something vested into frequenting your store they will not leave. Even if it is small amount. |
