It depends on the business and how the company operates. Many companies will give employees an incentive for a great idea that would generate more business. Write it down the idea on paper and date it. Then go to the Marketing department's VP and pitch the idea to him/her. See how they react. Inform him/her that if they use your idea you want to be compensated in a way that would be beneficial to both parties. Otherwise, by writing down the idea and dating it and if they use the idea without your permission then you have a good lawsuit.
Once an idea is written under copyright laws it is protected. The company would have to prove otherwise they were going to do the same idea.

Not sure about the actual marketing side of things, but if you want to prove that you had the idea first then write it out in full and post it to yourself recorded delivery (this will be dated). Just writing something down and dating it doesn't prove that you thought of it before they did!

if it is truly NEW Idea, you can copyright a logo for that idea, but keeping the idea and getting all the credit is not a likely event
sorry!

If it's where you work at the moment check your employment contract... Most UK contracts of employment state that anything you come up whilst working with them belongs to them and that you can't do work for other companies (unless with permission).
