Depends on the field, becoming an art director takes awhile. You require quite a bit of experience before that happens, you have to really get background experience and then work your way up. |

The only logical answer to this is whichever workload you would prefer.
Forget the destination, its the journey.
Instead of focusing on where you want to be down the line (e.g. director), why not figure out what you want to do now? |

College is not going to land you a job in advertising. It won't hurt, but it will not get you a job in an extremely competitive field.
You will usually start out as a Jr. Copywriter or Jr. Art Director and then move your way up to creative director. Starting pay is around 40K tops (in nyc). Then you can expect about $5,000 per year raise, provided that you're good. In fact, I haven't seen it any other way, unless you have done your own publication or something.
From there you usually make more money and climb up by switching from one firm to the next.
I used to work for McCann-Erickson in NY, and I started as a copywriter. Best of luck to you. It's a great career. |
