Byrd | If you were cold calling looking for work or an internship what would you say? |

Depending where you are and what your degree program is, I'd say that approach is worthless. Also depending on your degree program, (if you're looking to go into sales for instance) I'd do everything I could, if I were you, to get a job instead of an internship. Even a crummy one; it's the best chance to get
My opinion: Internships are a community obligation, a useless liability for businesses that feel pressure to do their civic duty and give some worthless dope a tour of the real world. It's "take your son or daughter to work day" for corporate entities. You can do sooo much more on every end with a job, even washing bottles. Hey, that's how Thomas Edison's partner in business started with his shop.
Bring the right philosophy to your work and every job anywhere will become a springboard for your meteoric rise. Ignore developing that philosophy, and you'll be another dumb cog in the beurocratic dry-rotted stack.
This philosophy? Email me for more =) it's not surprising but it isn't something most people chance upon by themselves.
So to get that job? Ask for it! Exhaust every possible channel through your school, personal network, Craigslist, and more to find someone who needs SOMETHING in a hire, and if you can be that something then attack it like the last thing you'll ever do.
You'll probably need to do this a dozen times or more to strike gold, but nothing you come upon by more traditional channels will compare to it.
Pardon me for ranting but that's how I wound up at my dream job selling printing presses, until they got bought- but not before I could learn skills and secrets there that strain the bounds of mortality. |

Good answers above. Most people are busy but helpful so they won't mind and if they can help you they will.
Whatever answer you get, always say thanks and by the way can you think of any other places that I should call?
Good luck
Scott
p.s. I assume you're already using the internet and school resources to the max, right? |

I would ask first, "Who does the hiring at your company?"
Then I would write that name down, and ask to speak with that person.
If I get someone on the line, I would be deadly honest.
I don't know if this applies to you, but presuming you are a student or recent graduate, I would say:
"I am a student at XXX University, and I am a major in marketing/advertising. I am looking for an internship. Does your company hire interns?"
This sounds pretty stupid and basic, but trust me, it beats all the indirect approaches I've seen. If you get a "no" answer, you've wasted only a few moments. If you get a "yes" answer, then be prepared to explain why you are the best intern they've ever considered hiring.
Good luck! |

If you have already applied for a job or intership, make sure some time has passed(a week or so) before you cold call. Sometimes employers can get really busy where they dont have enough time to actually look at the resumes, so give it some time first. When you do call, just tell them "Hi my name is so-and-so, and I am calling in reference to (blank) position or intership. Is the position still open or has it been filled?" Usually they'll ask when you applied or they will transfer you directly to whomever is doing the hiring. If they say they are still hiring, then call back another time.
If you havent applied yet, just ask about interships or jobs. Sometimes they will let you send in a resume even if they aren't hiring. They might even have references on which companies do have interships. |

Explain that you are a student working on a degree in X-area and are looking for an internship for the summer/school year (whatever) and ask if they have a program for interns. Most places do not, but if you are willing to work for free just for the experience (or college credit), they will quickly create one. |
