If your looking for a tradesman would you look in Yellow Pages?
My husband is thinking of advertising and it's quite costly so we were wondering whether it is worth it. Thanks

Great question. People look in a number of places and Yellow Pages is one of them. I worked as sales rep. for Yellow Pages. With respect to the sales reps be very wary if you are a first time advertiser in Yellow Pages. They are highly targeted! Firstly do a thorough competition analysis. It's not hard - just pick up the local directory and see how many competing firms there are and see how big their adverts are. You don't need to be the largest on the page and beware - the premiums for colour are very expensive ranging from 40%-75%. It helps to be at the start of the classification too. If you haven't thought of a business name yet think of one beginning with "A" as ads are filed alphabetically. I recommend that you monitor the response of your advert with an 0800 number. More people will call it and from your bill you will be able to see the number of hits per month and work out a cost per enquiry. If you take some time and plan properly your advert will produce a profit. Use the services of a professional agency rather than relying on the yellow pages studio - it will be worth it. One last point - don't overlook all surrounding parish magazines - they work well.

I always go to the yellow pages first. Then I check with the BBB. Advertising is deductible, if you can afford it, it's well worth the expense.

MY BROTHER WAS a master mechanic and he had a very success full business and he never advertised. His clients always were referred by happy customers
but
maybe to get started it would be worth the effort as you should get the word on the street that you are available..

max
it might be or else job sites.

Ad Man
Of course they would. If you want to know more,
I wrote the BEST book on EFFECTIVE Yellow Page advertising. Take a look on:

I would online to the local Trading Standards Office, where there is an "Approved Contractor"site. At least these contractors have to abide by certain standards or they will be removed from the list.I think most people would be more confident than just a random selection from yellow pages.

I think it would be worth it. I always look in the yellow pages. My friends do too.
The only thing is...I tend to go first for the ones with the free phone numbers. It might be worth him considering this.

You can advertise some site with local classifieds. quite a few sites offer that capability and it seems to work quite well for me. I am real estate agent in Houston, and I have put my ads on couple local classifieds.

leandar
I will search at Google or Yahoo for it , becouse then we will reach at good Yellowpages too...

coral
It all depends who/where he is targeting. For local people to find you, it's a good place people always look. But for a more spread out approach, sometimes it helps to put it online where people always search. For example yahoo yellow pages or put your website online and submit it to search engines.

My husband used to be a contractor so I know the pains one must go through to pay for advertising. But, now I work for a magazine and found a lot of loop-holes. If you need help, email me: support@ezlistmagazine.com

Amanda
I definitely would - it would be my first port-of-call. I would always call a few places and see who had the best price and who I got the best vibe from also.

Some pho. books offer first time ads for free. Call the differnt books and ask about it. Usually it's the really small adds. But for starting you gotta take what you can get.

I do plumbing for friends and family and although it is not my main job 'nor a business I would never pay the expensive prices for advertising. I needed a plasterer 3 weeks ago and never looked in the Yellow pages, the first thing I did was ask friends if they knew anybody who was good, reliable and cheap.
I think that there is plenty of work out there for good reliable, fair tradesmen. A good reputation and word of mouth is usually a good way to go, even advertising in sandwich bars, cafes and local shops is still more cost effective.
Good luck!!

Loads of tradesmen advertise in yell pages. Many are cowboys and i would always ask friends first. Maybe you could bribe friends to recommend you - tell them you would offer a reward -just a bottle of boose or a meal. Worth a try??
