Selling an ebook is a lot like selling small software products, and many software distributors do eBooks too. Some eBook software supports license keys, just like software.
In general, the download services charge a per-transaction price and a percentage, just like PayPal does and they handle letting the customer download your product after they have paid.
Going directly through PayPal you will have to do your own delivery/download approval, etc..
For instance, for a product under $40, Clickbank charges $1 plus 9.9% and has a $49.95 setup fee. RegNow charges $1 plus 6.9% and has no setup charge or membership fee. Paypal typically charges 30 cents plus 2.9%, but you have to deliver yourself.
Payloadz is run by PayPal, has the same transaction fees as PayPal, and they handle the downloading for you. But they also charge a monthly fee (they promise to refund 150% of the first month's fee if you have no sales) based on how much you sell. It's free for under $100 in 30 days. There is no automatic downgrade of the monthly fee. There is also a no-fee option for a flat 15% of all your sales. All this and more is on the "Account" tab on their site.
So which service you choose, and which kind of account you choose, depends on your product pricing, what other services (like monthly subscriptions) you need, and how easy they make it for you.
I hope this helps. Good luck.
P.S. I found out about Payloadz.com today while researching this question.
