I have 35 years experience in advertising
I am guessing you are a student or someone totally unfamiliar with advertising in general. If not, you would know that a mascot is generally a live or animated animal or creature associated with sports teams, schools, colleges, or some institutions.
In the world of advertising, there are various logos, trademarks or commercial characters used to promote certain products or services. Tony the Tiger of Kellogg's cereal fame, the Maytag repairman, or the Taco Bell Chihuahua are a few examples of that type.
But they are usually temporary until another marketing campaign comes along.
There are many examples of logos where corporations use characters, such as Disney and Mickey Mouse. But that would hardly be called a mascot.
The concept of using characters to aid the consumer in remembering certain companies is centuries old and was employed by businesses like saloons with a Rusty Pelican or The Golden Goose on their signage back in the 1800's. Therefore, it's nothing new or nor original. It just is a visual reminder and nothing more.

Mascots are for sports teams. I think you're talking about characters or symbols. Or spokes-geckos. They humanize the product, provide easy brand recognition, etc. And they are cheaper and easier to control than human spokepeople, who seem to get into trouble.
Think of the AFLAC duck or Tony the Tiger or the GEICO geeko.Very memorable, yes? |

In addition to the other answers, i would mention that animals are more trusted than people. Some researches on message acceptance have been done and they discovered that viewers trust the message more if it is delivered by bear, bunny, dolphin or mascot rather than human. Of course, this applies for particular products like foods and cleaning supplies. So, they are important in order to convey trustworthiness. |
