i "invented " an item, i drew it and sent it with a detailed description to a marketing company. i also sent a copy of the same thing to myself recorded delivery which remains unopened. now i see my invention on the shelves in asda! i think someone nicked my idea, what can i do about it? please dont answer if you dont know. |

Any invention has first got to be legally patented by you - in the country in which you are currently domiciled.
The patent will be valid in all the countries which are diplomatically linked with that country.

I have a patent on a medical device, We mfg it ourselves and sent it to a hosp for field testing. This is what our patent attorney told us about our product being in the public eye before applying for a patent.
You have 6mo. of public eye viewing before you apply for a patent. After that 6mo. period if a patent is not applied for then it is open to whomever sees it to start the patent process. This 6mo. period gives you time for people to use the product and give suggestions as to changes to make it a better product.
Looks like this is a learning experience for you. good luck on the next one.
Keep in mind that to patent something is very costly. We ended up paying about 5,000.00 for attorney fees, patent searches and the patent fees up front just to get it all said and done. and every few years you have to pay the patent dues or you will loose the patent. We just paid our first one and it costed 450.00. |

Unfortunately, Angie is correct. Posting things to yourself will only copywrite material such as music. With inventions you need to acquire a patent. |

I know a chap who invented something - took it to China with instructions for a company to manufacture it. Next thing, he saw the same thing on sale in the High street. He took the company to court and lost a fortune trying to get them to cough up....they never paid him a penny. Don't waist you time and money on this one ..put it down to experience. |

check if asda or another company has patented the idea. the letter you sent to yourself i think should protect your idea if it is stamped with a date. chances are that someone thought about it before you in which case you can do nothing, all you can do for now is check the patent of the product. |
