Is Best Buy a rip off?
I went to a Best Buy last week to buy a plasma tv that was on sale for about $1,700 it was a 50" plasma, i get Best Buy ads in my sunday papper, that tv that i wanted to to buy was listed in their ad as stated above, well this is what i go when i got to the store,
sales rep told me that the tv was listed wrong, it was for a 42" plasma, he said if i wanted the 50" i could get for $2,700. i got mad because that is false advertisement. i take the ad with me to the store and showed him the ad, showed the the tv i wanted that was on sale. i will no longer shop at Best Buy (Worst Buy) ever again. I went to bestbuy.com and this is what i got,
let me know what you think about this?
On the front cover of the 9/23 Best Buy printed ad insert, they mistakenly priced the 50" Panasonic TH-50PZ77U (8501711) at $1709, after $90 savings. They intended to advertise the 42" Panasonic TH-42PZ77U (8501751) at $1709, after $90 savings. Best Buy will not be honoring this price on the 50" Panasonic TH-50PZ77U (8501711).

Best Buy apologizes for any inconvenience and will offer a @100 instant rebate on all Plasma Televisions this week. This instant rebate will be reflected in the online and in-store prices, and well be reduced from regular sale prices.

.read the fine print on the bottom of the sales add:
Not responsible for any photo or typographical errors.
Selection varies from store to store

.....
Wow, you sure like to capitalize on other people's mistakes, don't you?

It was a typo. Get over it. They didn't take your money and give you the wrong tv, did they?

I can understand both sides here. As a consumer, I am outraged when a company advertises a special, with the specific goal of bringing customers into the store -- and then says "oh, it was a mistake," and refuses to honor the advertised price.

On the other hand, honest people do sometimes make mistakes. Normally, stores honor advertisements that contain "minor" mistakes (e.g. if the advertisement says $1,899 but it was supposed to say $1,999), but for an extreme mistake where honoring the price could actually cost millions of dollars, I can undersand why the company would choose to stand firm on its small-print disclaimers in the ad.

The cost, of course, is customer anger and dissatisfaction, but Best Buy and Circuit City and Fry's are used to that -- they constantly engage in bait-and-switch and other OVERTLY deceptive practices that alienate customers.

Invalid rebate promises are high on my list -- they add together "mutually-exclusive" rebate offers, or advertise rebates long after they've expired, or advertise rebates without noting that they are only available to "upgrade" customers.

I won't buy from Circuit City again, after they tricked me with a "rebate" promise which turned out to be invalid; then when I returned the item, they charged me an $80 "return fee." But if I refused to do business with any electronics retailer that screwed me, I'd be out of retailers: I've been scammed by Fry's, Best Buy, Good Guys, CompUSA, and many more (I buy a lot of computer equipment). And yes, NewEgg is on the list of companies that misled me, and made me pay for shipping both ways for their mistake.

And there you have it: they ALL cheat me, and I get angry, but then when I want to buy a computer or monitor or camera, I have to go back to one of them.

As long as we continue to march into the stores like sheep when we see a great price in the ad, and then do it again after we're denied the advertised offer the first time, we pretty much deserve whatever they do to us.

Yes they are...my friend works there and we always look at his discount and what it really costs them.

put it this way, they make a TON off of you.

go to www.newegg.com

example..he bought a 50" Samsung - retail 4000, he got it for 2700

HDMI cable - retail 160, he got it for 15
50 foot rj45 cable - retail 50 or higher, his price, 2.79

deniver2003
According to Panasonic the 50" plasma TV retails for $2800. Given BBs price of $2700 with a $100 rebate I would say they are right on with their price. Sounds like you want to capitalize on an honest mistake. Retailers reserve the right to correct ad misprints.

I hate best buy! I bought a camera and a warinty and then the screen cracked on my camera so i brought it in and they were like "oh well sorry your warinty doesn't cover that" and i was like what? they said anything that happens to the outside of the camera doesn't count and i was like why didn't you tell me that when i bought the warinty?! and then they wanted me to give them $50 for an estimate of how much it would cost to fix and he said it would probably be about the same price as the camera itself and i was like well the why would i give you $50 just to find that out? I hate best buy and i'm never going there again.
