Having just started a blog myself and trying to get some traffic to it, I'd say that SEO is important. But it's important to understand what bits of SEO are most important. For a while it was all about meta tags. These days, while meta tags are still important, some search engines don't use them.

I'd suggest the following as being most important:

1) Pick a keyword to optimize a particular page for
2) Ensure that keyword appears in your title tags
3) Ensure that keyword appears in your h1 tags

If you do nothing other than that, you'll improve your search engine rankings. The other end of this is picking a keyword with good traffic but not a lot of competitive sites, which is a different topic altogether.
