Depends on the product. I usually try cheaper brands at least once to see if they're any use.

it first depends on who you are targetting as an end user and secondly how you want to position this product to the market place.

You have to remeber an brand doesn't just mean a name of a product. A brand creates a 3-D scope / character of what a product is / stands for. See an interesting model titled the brand itentity prism.

Some products rely on branding as its key Unique selling point since the function attributes of the product are restrictive, such as a plastic bag. For example, calvin klien aftershave.... The fucntional attributes of the aftershave is no more than smelling good.... yet CK's advertising focuses on their brand which people perceive as fashionable, sexy, attractive and successful. By using the brands characteristics as stimuli, consumers relate to these aspects of the product rather than what it actually does. Therefore, branding is vital in the consumer decision making process....

Marketers need to push consumers down the decison making model and sometimes that is very difficult to do so when a products functional attributes are restrictive.... hense branding and emotional advertising linked with the characteristics of that brand.

I think branding is very predominant now a days.

When I was young we didn't know what brands were.

We were bought cheap plimsolls off the local market for gym/ sport classes - whereas now my nephew and neices are all adidas this, nike that and k-swiss the other.

Peer pressure has a role to play but these same brands are causing kids to get robbed in the streets and having to walk home with no coat/trainers/phone etc and it just seems so dangerous - I worry for them.

back then all the kids in our school had the same cheap plimsolls, uniform was manditory in secondary (high) school so avoided people being picked on/bullied for looking different.

Probably from my upbringing - but even to this day I don't buy into labels. I just buy something if I particularly like it.

Ask that question to Burberrys. The trouble they had after the chavs appropiated the brand as a symbol of chavness, lol. Nobody was going near them and most chavs were buying cheap Asian imitations

Consumers perceived differences among products through branding.

Brands identify the source or maker of a product and allow consumers to assign responsibility to a particular manufacturer or distribuitor.

Because of past experience, with the product and its marketing program over the years, consumers find out which brands satisfy their needs and which ones do not.

As a result, brands provide a shorthand device or means of simplication for their product decisions.

If consumers already know the brand, they do not have to spend more time to make decisions.

As consumers' lives become more complicated, rushed, and time starved, the ability of a brand to simplify decision making and reduce risk is invaluable.

If I understand your question, of course branding affects a consumer's purchasing decisions...

Can you imagine buying a soft drink from "Tidy Bowl" or a cereal from "Tenactin?"

Advertising is all about "top of mind" awareness.

It all depends on your brand strategy.

If your product is an unknown product, you might still sell a huge quantity by offering it at a lower price.

Nowadays, viral marketing can make an unknown product into a hip brand. It is all a matter of marketing.
