Depends what you want to advertise and how popular CL is in the city where you're advertising (that should be obvious by how many posts are on it). You have to be careful if you're trying to sell something because sometimes scammers target CL, will try to pay you with a fake money order. I've had mixed results -- I've sold a few things, had no luck selling my car, had lots of job interviews.

I have sold a few things on Craigslist. I search for used cars, sofas, etc. I have also applied for jobs there, both freelance & permanant. The lists in larger cities seem to be the best.
I never got a job interview from a Craigslist ad, I think Monster is better for that.
