I recently started working for a company that currently does not have a website. I was looking for any suggestions as to if it is better to create a website yourself or pay professional people to design one for our company. My company sells gas and has 14 different branches, however, the name of the branch changes depending on the location. So all together there are 14 branches with 5 different names.

It depends on your skill and what you want the site to do. If you have the graphics skills and web development knowledge to put together a good site, go for it. Most people don't have this however, which is why us developers keep our jobs. :) |

For what you're talking about, I would say it would be fine to create your own site (if you know how) especially since there's so many different branches/names. I would think that paying someone for the amount of traffic you may get would be a waste.
However, with that being said, if you don't know how to do a website and/or have absolutely no time to devote to creating one but you feel you need one that badly, then by all means find someone locally that can do some sites for you cheap. Make sure to get quotes from two-three companies if you go this route. Ask to see some of the websites they've done in the past.

If the company cares about its image it would make sense to use a real company to design something nice.
You should really think about why you are creating the website. What are your goals. Have the company create a budget to meet those goals and go for it.

It depends what you want in a website. You can do it yourself pretty easily with an online site builder and they actually turn out pretty good. http://www.doggydomains.com has a package called website tonight that does this.
If you want something more complex or more professional you should hire someone to do it. I think that company does custom designs too. |
