Is it cheaper for me to make my own business cards?
I have a colour laser printer and am wondering if it would be cheaper for me to do my own business cards. I am running Office 2007 which has some pretty decent designs on there and I can't say I need 1000's of the things. What do you think? Will decent card cost me more to buy than doing a run of business cards at a printers?

Thanks for your advice.
Additional Details
I must be the only person who doesn't rate Vistaprint. I ordered business cards from them in April and I am still waiting for them! I am waiting for them to answer my emails etc and I am not a happy bunny with them.

I've been running my own business for 22 years now and I get the luxury of talking all over the world on a particular subject. At the end, people tend to flock with business cards. So when I say this, I say it with all due diligence...

Home made business cards stink.

Swamy
It depends on the volume of the cards. If you can print a good number of them on one sheet and cut them to size, it may be OK.

If you want to change the design or some information often, it is again a good idea to do a short print run on your color laser printer.

A few hundred cards or more will be economic from a regular printer.

Have you looked at:
www.vistaprint.co.uk

They do free biz cards, you only pay for postage.
It might be cheaper to get them from vistaprint 'cos by the time you factor in the costs of quality paper, & ink it can work out deerer to print your own. :-)

Even after the free introductory offer as long as you only order 250 cards at a time you can still get them free (just paying the postage)

Cheaper yes, but most of the blank cards for the purpose are 'punch out' type and leave little tabs where they were attached. I have seen some better cards that aren't attached to the rest of the sheet but have a single sticky backing sheet. they look a lot more professional but need a flat paper path which precludes use by most laser printers.

You can get business cards very cheaply from www.vistaprint.co.uk. A large number of designs to choose or you can upload your own. Just make sure that, when you order, you don't accept any of their offers or it works out more expensive.

It would be most definatly cheaper to do make your own business cards. I actually just got done doing some research on this topic and I found business card paper costs approx. $15 for 250 cards where You would have to pay a company such as vista print $20+ dollars for every purchase after the initial purchase (as they offer 250 free on the initial). The one major disadvantadge going after this type of deal, is it would take 2 to 3 weeks for you to receive your order, unless you want to pay a good sized payment for shipping. Feel free to contact me if you need more information on this topic or have any other business questions. My email is pcguy1989@yahoo.com

If you only need up to about a thousand cards its better to do them yourself. I personally use photodraw which is pretty basic and has lots to offer.
You can finish them off by laminating them and then trimming to size. One of the problems with printing companies i that they very often charge a "set up" and design fee and will probably have minimum batch quantities. The upside of this is that you can ask for a back up disc to be supplied with the cards (they may try and demand an extra fee for this though).
Why not have a go and see how you get on with it first.

It is cheaper, but you should take time & make a good job of them as a poorly made card could be a bad reflection on your business.

actually i saw some paper and necessary item required to make professional type cards at home at a stationary shop.. cant think which one.. ive been to all the shops i went on that day.. but cant find them ..i was shopping for some stationaries and stmblled upon them thought i'd come back and get them when i need them. alas cant find them. All i know is that i saw them in the section where there are printer labels and name stickers, cd labels etc.

ill search again and will get back if i find them.

answering your question.. it really depends upon what sort of business you are in .. say if you are an accountant, solicitor etc then it is not recomended as it not professional. if you have a business such as clothes shop, bakery (cant think of anything else) then it is ok. as long as you have good quality paper etc.

i tried experimenting with different papers and inks on ly laserjet.. i just wasted money.

go to local copycat, i had 50 cards made for 10 pounds recently. i thought they were cheap, for me that is .

yes it is. you make make enough for your needs, rather than having several hundred that may never get used

why not with computers and printer
why pay someone when you can do it yourself.
and they look good.
get some real good paper or colored paper.
enjoy and we look forward to seeing you post one here in a few days.................
