Is it illegal to put stuff in/on people's mailboxes without using the postal service?
I had someone in the neighborhood place a bag that contained a flyer and a catalogue in my mailbox. It did not go thru the postal service because it was not stamped, and I also seen a car going thru the neighborhood stopping at mailboxes. Is this illegal? I want to complain but I want to make sure my facts are straight before i do.

Here are the FACTS from the Post Office web site:

Only the United States Postal Service may use mailboxes for delivery without paying postage (Flyers, magazines, notes, letters, etc. found in or on mailboxes may be charged postage due) .
If you have received flyers on or in your mailbox, please contact your local Post Office facility.
Non-postal information, advertising, and any other matter not bearing postage may be placed in door slots (These are not considered mail boxes).

it is considered tampering with the mail and it's a federal offence. the only people that can touch the mail box is the postal service and the addresse. i believe you can place things on top of it like a phone book, etc but once you touch it then it's a crime punishable be law and an invaision of privacy. Just call the post office and ask them. i'll bet they have already beed reported though!

do you not have any other possible thing in this world to do? jeese, you should be ashamed of yourself! by the way, we dont send the nude magazimes in the mail, we hand deliver them to all of our customers.

What a confusion of answers.
No one may use a mailbox set up for USPS mail (postage bearing) except the USPS. Once anyone puts anything non-postage bearing in the box they are tampering with the postal service. There specific manufacturing specs for the boxes in which a postal employee may leave postage bearing letters. Any flyer left by the USPS has had postage paid in order to leave it there.
A slot in the door is just that, and not a postal box.
Any Avon material left in the mailbox is generally without postege and does not go in the box. That person faces fines for tampering.

?
No its not, but if some defaces or destroys it that is a federal crime!!!!

Yes it is illegal. A few years back a mailman was delivering Christmas cards (his own) and he got in a lot of trouble for doing that.

Why would that be illegal. It's just like putting something on your doorstep. You could try getting a petition to make it a rule that says "no soliciting" in your neighborhood.
