Since you have so many contradictory answers, I thought I'd check with the Post Office to see what the REAL scoop is. Here's a quote from the PO on mail boxes:
A flyer cannot be placed in a mailbox after putting a stamp on it unless the item was actually mailed.
"No part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail." |

Oh yes it is a federal offense.
Technically the mailbox is federal property and to be used only for official use of mail delivery. |

Yes!!! I believe you are allowed to hang small "baggie" from the "flag" of the mailbox but you might want to check that too. I know you cannot put items in the mailbox, nor can you hang magnets from it. I've seen many people put booklets in a plastic type bag and put the handle of it around the flag that you put up to tell the postal worker you have outgoing mail. Sometimes you need to get a permit for this too. I've already seen people put things on peoples mailboxes only to have it all taken off, thrown out and a letter sent to that person with a warning about a fine. |

I think they are for US Mail only. But, since you go buy the mailbox yourself it is individual property, therfore making it legal. |
