That's a fair question, and before you launch into the world of blogging, you need to consider your "Niche", and how large of a demographic you could realistically capture considering your venue and your competition.
If there are already real world industry professionals in your "niche" then you have a long hard road to plow to make yourself "known" as an authority on a subject and gain a loyal following of readers.
This isn't impossible, but it will take several years for your to actually profit directly from your blogging, if it is for blogs sake alone.
The most painstaking task is building a reputation in your industry, which is difficult to do, but by actively commenting intelligently on other blogs, building friendships with other blog authors, syndicating articles on other sites, and working your butt off you can claim a niche as your own.

The odds may be against you, but I believe it is possible, if you have something others would be interested in reading. I also have plans to make a lot of money from a blog (to fund some big projects I want to engage in) and think I will be able to do this, if I ever stop doing things like writing here, so I can get around and down to working on the blog or blogs.
At one seminar I went to, the instructor said that "content is King" on the internet. If true, and you can produce really good or at least desirable content, there should be ways to make a good deal of money, if that is your goal.
