agentfixx | Is it ok to use clipart from photo editing or word processing software on items you intend to sell? |
We've all used the clipart from programs such as Microsoft Word or Photoshop to make flyers, brochures, etc. But would it be braking any laws to use the clipart on items you intend to sell? I'm designing t-shirts and have been using my own designs, but there are some clipart pics I would love to use as well. |

Most of cliparts are copyrighted. There are places where you can get royalty-free, copyright-free high quality images for free.
Here is a great list of places where you can get public domain images. |

This really is the time to read the fine print. Generally speaking, clip art is sold for royalty-free use, but read the package. |

Most clip art packages are royalty free for use, even in commercial products. The licensing terms probably just prevent unauthorized copying and redistribution of the cliparts, but embedding cliparts in brochures should be fine. Consult the licensing terms of course, and check with a lawyer who's familiar with copyrights and corporate laws if you are unsure. |

About 6 months ago, I started selling photos on-line in addition to other avenues to increase income (rather than leave them on my computer doing nothing) and I have been amazing at the results. While this may not answer your question perfectly, it will help to look at many outlets for your art as well.
If you would like to find out more information, please see my 360 profile and read the blog. I hope it helps you!

You have to get consent to use them on an item you intend on selling. |

I heard about a little old lady that got in trouble for using clipart in her needlepoint she was selling. I think you have to find out if the images are copyrighted or not. |

You need to check the copyright information on the clipart. Some will allow you to use up to a certain number in one publication with/without referencing the copyright information. Others require that you request permission to use them for anything. So if you are putting something on clothes, check out the copyright information before you do it and save yourself lots of trouble. |
