Is it true that advertising manipulates consumers?

You could look at it several ways.

In one sense, advertising is simply to inform the consumer. How would you know what's available without advertising.

At the same time, advertising creates false need or desire. Most things we see advertised are not things we actually need. The advertisements make us feel like our life would be better if we had the thing and so we buy it. In this sense, advertising is manipulative.

You could also look at how advertising targets children so they will ask their parents to get the item. This may be even more manipulative because it's trying to inspire purchases through the kids.

Next time you go into a grocery store and walk down the cereal or snacks item. Notice what items are about 3 feet off the floor and which items are 5-6 feet off the floor. This merchandising is another form of advertising.

What about products that use celebrity endorsements. They are implying the celebrity uses the product and possibly even implying the consumer can be more like the celeb if they use the product. A similar thing can be said for movie/tv tie-ins.

In it's simplest form, advertising is just information. But in reality it does seek to manipulate consumers by creating demand for a product they may not really need.

Absolutely.

Paco Underhill has written several books on the science of shopping, item placement, package design and color, etc. When I read one book, I was shocked at how manipulated we are.

A quick example of manipulation: go look at a FedEx logo. They have designed the font so that the letters "e" and "x" in the word form an arrow between them. You don't notice it unless you are looking for it but it plays on your subconscious.

Yes. Is this a trick question? Almost 100% of advertising tries to align consumers [ethically and/or no] to the advertiser's product/service/agenda or whatever ...

I have personally signed dozens of producer affidavits attesting to the legality of everything governed by Network and corporate guidelines which tend to be extremely strict.
On the other hand, I have also been in strategy meetings and written creative briefs derived from the results of those meetings. There is no question that agencies labor over the most effective angles for bracketing and coaxing product features and benefits to elicit the desired reaction from their target audiences.

Yes, absolutely! The whole purpose of advertising is to try to convince/manipulate you into buying the product of company X versus the product of company Y, and often the argument is based on absurd, silly emotional reasons which make no common nor economic sense.

Sharing Mind
definitely. why? because it works. why it works? because most of us are easy to be manipulated. only once we have been manipulated we start to be cautious.

ofcourse it does they have to make their product seem special if they want to sell it, its all about money..

Isn't that the whole point of advertising? Associating a product with an experience that you would enjoy is manipulation. Look at beer and soda ads. They have nothing to do with the product.

Yes, there are many different types of messages to get you to act. First they must get you to think about what they want to see you. Then they must get you to think you need their product or service. Then they must get you to take action and purchase it. If that's not manipulative nothing is...Im sure you agree.
