Direct Mail is superior to everything when it comes to advertising your website....including search engine ranking. (unless of course you happen to be one of the 1% of companies who have solidified themselves at the top of every keyword search)
Direct Mail puts you and your offer right in front of the specific person who will want your service....all other forms of advertising rely on waiting on the customer to initiate the idea that he wants to look for somebody like you (search engine, yellowpages), or the medium is only available to those who subscribe to it ( newspaper)
Everybody goes straight to their mailbox when they get home....and mail that has "knock your socks off" incentives, and looks professional get serious consideration...all the rest of the mail...the lame conservative deals, and home-made looking stuff gets tossed in the trash.
Any 16 year old can put up a decent site and eventually get listed high with SEO...but people start getting printed material from you, and you will find yourself on a whole other level of "legitimate" and "Trust"
If you consider direct mail, there are some thoughts that may be of value to you on my personal site www.doranpeck.com

Yes and no. It depends on the audience for the Web site. It may be a good idea if it is a news-type site.
It may be a good site for people who also like to read the paper that also use the Web.
Press releases are a good way to advertise, and are very effective with a small cost!

I guess it'd be okay, but I think that advertising on the internet would be better.

That would really depend on what type of website you have.
The answer is probably no.

The newspaper could be a very beneficial tool for advertising an apartment rental website. Here's how: Take out a classified ad in the middle of apartment rental listings which reads something along the lines of "Free Report: Avoid making these top 7 most costly mistakes apartment renters make" or something which someone renting an apartment would find interesting and useful to them. Then create what is called a squeeze page (which you also list in your classified ad) that when people go to, they can download your free report in exchange for them giving you their e-mail or phone number. You then follow up with contacting them with other tid bits of free suggestions and before you know it, they are seeking you out as the expert in your field.
