Well let’s see…Is marketing a better career than advertising? That is a question only you can answer perhaps I can try and enlighten you.
Marketing: is everything related to selling, whether you selling a product or a service. It deals with all the issues related to the product and the market such as: the right product, the right price, sold in the right place, communicated well (promotion). To answer to these one must have information on the market, such as: market share, competitors, consumers, etc. Other factors that influence strategy decisions: political situation in the country (such as legislations), economical factors (such as buying power), social factors (such as culture and habits), technological factors (such as innovation possibilities). Basically, marketing is ‘everything’. Imagine the market place as a battle zone due to the fact that you will be competing with other similar products and services. Marketing is: 1. the strategy - choosing your weapons (by analyzing the company resources), choosing the battle ground (product sector/s) and them; 2. setting the tactics – setting prices, promotions, after sales service, etc.
Advertising: is a segment of marketing. Imagine marketing as an orange which has many segments. Some of the marketing segments are: public relations (PR), advertising, sales promotion, personal sales, direct marketing, publicity, etc. As you can see adverting is only one of the many segments in marketing. Generally speaking, advertising is the promotion of goods, services, companies and ideas, etc. In advertising one basically works with creating the art work for the ads (TV, radio, press, magazine, outdoor, etc.), choosing the right communication message (copywriting), etc. The advertising agency does all this.
To resume it all, if you follow a career in marketing you will be better equipped for various job options while as if you follow simply advertising then you might only get a job in an adverting agency since there are very few companies who have an adverting department. The advertising department in these companies is responsible for writing the advertising brief (after consulting with the marketing department) to the advertising agencies, approving the advertising work and controlling the advertising campaign so that it goes according to plan.
If you are a graphic designer and that is what you enjoy them you should stick to what you enjoy and are good at. The choice is yours and yours only.
