willow | Is paying an SEO agency a waste of money? |
I've heard from some that it's not worth it and that I can do it on my own. Anyone?
Thanks |

It's like any other service industry: There are some agencies that are good and some that are not. If you pay $5,000 for an SEO project from a not-so-good agency, and you don't get any return on your investment, that's a waste of money. If you pay $20,000 to a good agency, and the project helps you make $50,000 profit ... not a waste of money. Whatever you spend, you need to be able to justify the expense.
Can you do it on your own? Of course. Again, like any other service, you can spend your time instead of your money and educate yourself. You can also learn to fix your own car, build your own house, etc.
If you have more time than money, I would take this route. There are lots of great resources on the web and in print for learning about SEO, PPC, social media, link building, etc.
Hope this helps. |

in general it is a waste of money because you waste dollars to chase pennies - it is only worthed if you have a whole bunch of websites and you are busy with more important things then optimizing. |

It is better to do it yourself. It is like paying someone to exercise for you. See site below for some simple tips on doing it yourself. |

SEO requires a lot of time and effort. SEO companies do this for a living - they have the time and (some) have the effort. Some SEO companies are not ethical in their practices so, unless you know at least a little about SEO, you are at their mercy. I strongly recommend learning SEO basics: http://www.spiderseeker.com
The answer to your question depends on how much time and effort you are willing and able to put into SEO. There are many things involved in SEO; a lot of testing, research and patience.
If you are targeting your products or services to a highly competetive market, you will more than likely have to resort to spending some money on advertising to obtain better search engine ranking for your highly competetive keywords. |

SEO is a art. Its not easy to think that you will learn in few days and you can professionally implement all your optimizing skills on websites.
Its better to know some of the important concepts in SEO and then choose a best agency. If any Agency is giving false promises, then you can easily know by your knowledge and look for other genuine agency.
There are experts and better SEOs in agencies. Don't be in the feeling that SEO is easy to learn and you can do perfectly on your own. |

If you know how to optimize a site, then I believe no one will optimize it better than the site owner, simply cause they know their business better. It also becomes a question of time, since SEO work is very time consuming, especially if you plan on doing your own link building campaigns. Also be on the lookout for SEO companies that promise the world. They usually don't...=)
Good luck... |

It really depends on how difficult your site will be to optimize. If you sell one or two products or your site revolves around one theme, it can be pretty easy.
If your site does not revolve around one product or theme, then you may need help.
But SEO firms can be very very expensive and in many cases, the return on investment is not worth it.
My site is a very difficult site to optimize but I learned a step-by-step method to optimize each page.
I am now #1 in Google for a product I sell - and I can prove it.
I wrote more about it on my blog below: |

Yes and no. If you have plenty of time to get around the learning curve then, yes it's a waste. If you want someone to coach you direct to the starting line, then no, it's not a waste. Really depends on your situation.
At the end of the day SEO is about 3 basic things imo:
1) Content (frequency, quality)
2) Backlinks & Anchor Text
3) Site Layout (onsite optimization)
All that being said, you can totally do it yourself. Spend some time reading, and more time 'doing'...study what works and repeat. The key is in taking action...

I think paying for a SEO can be very expensive if the return you expect for that investment is less than 10 thousand dollars. SEO requires time, plenty analysis and personnel, so that won't make it too cheap.
If you want to save, you can hire a SEO company in India or Peru. Service is very good in both countries and the price is much cheaper. You can also go on your own, but you'll have to learn.
Good luck. |
