The Yellow pages is a collossal waste of advertising money.

Use your advertising budget on radio, TV and direct mail. good marketing is the act of becoming "the clear choice" in the consumers mind before they actually need your service. If they have to go to the yellowpages to find a solution....a book where your ad is sitting in the midst of all your competitors...then your marketing is failing.

You do need to be "Listed" in the yellowpages because every household has one, and people may need to get your number.

However, research surveys show that 76% of adults have not looked in the yellopages in the last 30 days

If you calculate the amount of time the yellowbook in your house is closed, per day, per month ...you will easily come to the conclusion, that in a years time (the amount of time your ad sits in there till next printing), the book is closed literally 99.9% of the time.

...and you'll be paying...say hundreds, if not a couple thousand per month for an ad sitting in a closed book, only seen by those few who were not already captured by your competitiors tv, radio, mail and print advertising.

"Passive advertising" (advertising that sits and waits for someone to discover it) is highly ineffective.

You need to agressively pursue media that allows you to get your message directly in front of a client...and often.

This is Pro-Active advertising. It is highly effective and generally costs 1/3 of what the Yellowpages sucks out of you.

I would encourage you to buy only a very small black and white space, or just be listed in the yellowpages.

A great headline, or offer such as "free consultation" will outpull a full size color ad 9 out of 10 times.

I steer all of my clients away from heavy yellowpage usage, and all have experienced improvements in marketing effectiveness. A measurable factor in this, is that the money they spent last year in the yellowpages is being spent in more targetable, and adaptable media this year.

Good Luck and good fortune in your ventures.

Well, even with access to the Internet, if I am looking for local good or services, I pick up the Yellow Pages as all are listed, whereas Internet sites can be hit or miss.

And sure, if someone has a display ad, I'd think they had some idea of customer care.

If your not already doing it put an ad in your local newspaper . As far as i know yellow pages are pretty expensive , however it only costs the price of a phone call to find out .
I find when I'm looking for say a Tradesman or local service i look in the local paper!

Sorry to answer with such a rubbish vague answer. It just depends on what business it is. A builder? Then yes, great advertising tool, that's where many people will go to find you. Other business types vary considerable.

In addition to that though, I would use your money elsewhere. Very expensive for the return you'll get the majority of the time.

For a local business such as yours Yellow Page adds are the best.
I use it daily. I have a custom embroidery and screen-printing business and we advertise in it. The yellow pages provide us with most of our business locally. When we are slow we go thru the yellow pages offering specials by telemarketing. We have a high rate of return telemarketing using the yellow pages as our call list. About 30% people called purchase that week. 10 % the following week. We advertise in hundreds of free online classifieds with mininual return. Online is great for international advertising but until the local yellow pages go online there is still a need for the thick book.

You have had some mixed reactions to this question but on the whole yellow pages really is the best. Yes, it is expensive initially.

It is always a good idea to decide just how much you want to pay annually on advertising. You will find that lots magazines and local papers will constantly be contacting you to suggest you advertise with them, they will give you a lot of statistics and percentages but they are not really interested in what it is you are advertising and just the revenue it produces for them.

Put together some really eye-catching flyers and create your own individual logo that will make people notice your business. It needs to be bold and colourful too and it is always amazing what you can put together simply by looking at the various internet sites for ideas. In order to avoid spending unnecessarily, produce your own. Visit those areas you want to do business in and put them through letter-boxes.

Depending on the size of your business, some local papers can include them inside their papers in a given postcode locality for instance for a price of course. It will do no harm to find out from them just what the cost is and what area their particular paper covers. Again it depends on your budget and how you want to reach Mr and Mrs Joe Public.

Any phonebook should be avoided at all costs. It has decreased in usage by over 65% in the past 3 years because it provides nothing of value to the consumer.

It's a list of ads. Everyone looks the same... how are you supposed to get your unique selling position across when there's 500 other companies saying the same crap?

Never, never, never get in the phonebook.

At absolute worst, and I think the time it takes to fill this out is STILL a waste of your life, get your free text listing.

Online you can jump into many different books for free. If you have your heart set on being in a book, get into those for free.

Sorry to go on a rant here, but I've worked with the Auto repair industry and seen how horrid the results are when they're in the phonebook.

The only reason that pitiful excuse for advertising is still around is because they instill fear in their customers... people think if they're not in the phonebook they'll wake up one morning and somebody will have stolen they're eyeballs!

Spend your money on something that will produce at least some sort of response... like flushing it down the toilet. Think about it, you'll get to hear that nice "wooooooosh" sound!

How rewarding!
