Exceed your customers' expectations. Seat them quickly. Be able to spend time explaining things. Be flexible. Bring bite-sized treats (a little more than the typical hard candy) before/after the meal at no additional cost. Get rid of staff who are annoyed when a customer walks in.

And most importantly, see if you can offer in-office lunches. They order online or by fax at least an hour or a day before the order is to be delivered. A minimum order of $20-50 should be required to make the travel time worthwhile.

Offer to cater to church and senior citizen events. Find out if the local senior citizen apartments take their residents to restaurants. Offer them a special deal (e.g. free dessert) if they come to yours.

Watch the highway and if you recognize the same bus lines or work trucks, contact them and ask if they'd like your place to be a stop on their route. Make it worth their while.

Good luck!

ps... avoid coupons. they train your customers not to visit unless they have one. better to build a word of mouth clientèle.

In most areas, the local paper will let you announce your opening in the business section of the paper. And, if you are unique enough or can create a unique angle, you might even get some free publicity by talking them into doing a feature article on your shop.

Aside from that, you could contact local business people in the area, and offer them a discount or free lunch for trying your facility. Put a jar at the check out counter to collect business cards and have a drawing each week or month for a free lunch or other bonus. Be sure to create a mailing list from the cards that you can use to mail special offers to your customers.

Get the mailing addresses and birthdays of your customers and send them a birthday card with a gift certificate good on their birthday.

One innovative restaurant in Texas increased their bottom line by over $60,000 a year by sending a congratulations letter to people in the area who had been promoted. The letter entitled them to a free bottle of wine with their meal.

Studies have shown people will spend more on wine and food if the music is classical.

Surprise your customers by giving a sample of your best dessert just before giving the check. Ask for their opinion, and include a special coupon good for a discount on that item the next time they come in.

People are creatures of habit, and need to do something at least 3 times before developing the habit. Use this to your advantage by making them attractive offers to return.

Do something crazy like having a "bald people eat free on Tuesday night" or create a contest like name this new meal or sponsor a barbecue cook off. Be creative, and don't be afraid to ask your vendors to participate and share their ideas.

Thanks for asking,
Rod

Pay a visit to your local media outlets...newspaper, radio etc. and offer some sort of barter / trade out deal to kick off your marketing program, ie: they provide an ad and you'll feed the sales staff for lunch once a week, or you'll provide tickets for the media outlet to give away in some sort of contest venue. (Concerning print, pay special attention to direct mail outlets as everyone within a certain area who has a mail box will get the opportunity to see your ad as opposed to subscription based print where only subscribers will have access to it.)

Also, flyers require a ton of work but are exceptional to getting the word out in your immediate area...hire local high school kids for an afternoon to blanket the local shopping mall - you could use your coupons here too!

Finaly, see your local Chamber of commerce and find out how much it costs to join and what services they'll provide for your membership. They may even be willing to waive the membership fee or an equal dollar amount in free food.

I hope these help...and good luck!

I have a small publication in Texas I also have an advertising degree, so let me offer some tips.

Coupons are a good way to get people in the door. Especially older people, they love coupons.
Things that catch my attention are off the wall headlines. If I saw an ad that said

Sandwiches, Pasta and Salad
$6.99

I would possibly think about it, but if I saw

Round Cafe with A Square Deal
Lunch Specials To Die For

I might be enticed to read the ad a second time just to figure out what it is saying.
I could go on forever...hope this helps...good luck!
