Free traffic exchanges will increase your alexa rank, other than that they are useless. You need visitors that have a desire of products, or services you have.
First you need something that will entice customers to visit, and return. Free suggestions, news, and tips are the most obvious things you can ad. You should really find one more service you can ad free.

As far as optimization you need a meta description, meta keywords embedded in your html for the search engines.

Follow the steps mentioned below:
1. Optimize your websites with Key Words and whereever possible use the keywords in hyperlinks
2. Add URL to Google ( addurl.google.com) directory, DMOZ( dmoz.com) directory and yahoo ( submit a site at the bottopm of homepage)
3. Find out similar websites ( NOT the compititors) and request them for a FREE Link exchange
4. Post free classifieds about byour service in free classified posting websites.
5. Write some original litrature (small but content rich) and post them in free ezine websites ( do NOT forget to put a Link to your websites at the end of the article. For example: "The source of this articles is www.bigisland-bigisland.com")
There are several other tools to increase the traffic. But above are the basic and mandatory requirements.

Here are 2 sites I would recommend. They are free traffic exchange sites that key on Europe. I like them because they aren't like a lot of the huge ones, where you see the same stuff all the time. Plus, you could target to Asia, too.
