Wards Business Directory is a great source of business related material and most public libraries have the whole set - there are several volumes in a set (4 I believe) and are quite pricey.

Depending on your industry/product, you can find quite a bit of information at the census bureau. Many times specific information can be hard to find so you must contact a rep via there contact number. They are very knowledgeable and can find you almost anything. It may take more time but it's free!

Not sure what you are actually looking for- can you be more specific.

Census is great (as noted).
Other government agencies have great stats- bureau of labor statistics, for example.
University libraries are usualy really good- they often have the premium search services (Lexus/nexus) that you can access.
Marketingresearch.com is often good, too.
adage.com- good for (of course) ad-related information.

For custom research (national level): if your needs are very limited, you can do a small custom study and probably keep things cheap.

For local research there are a million DIY solutions to get what you need.

Most college libraries have the Dunn and Bradstreet listing books. If not a large public library will. This will give you every bit of info you need on any publicly traded company....even corporate profile, contact names, etc
