First question to ask yourself is are you a creative thinker...someone who can come up with ideas. You'll need that skill in either of those two majors.
Marketing , I think, is the broader of the two majors- marketing looks at all the possible ways to get your product message out there. So, it encompasses advertising, direct mail, direct sales, indirect sales and any other method of putting your message out there. So in terms of flexibility, you have more options at this stage and can perfect your skill set as you continue your studies.
As an employer, I hate to see people coming out of college with no direct experience in their field. Their resumes are full of job experience, but nothing that says "I know what marketing is".
So in addition to thinking about a major, make sure you do at least 2 internships (yes they will probably be for no pay or little pay) so your resume has some depth to it. If you can help on a research project one of your profs is doing, jump in on it. And then try to add some other experience during your summer break- also volunteer to hand out flyers for a local radio promotion- things like that will give you a big feel for what you will be faced with. Better to find out now what you like and don't like. |

For advertising you need to be good with writing, and graphic arts. For marketing, good with MIS, Finance/Accounting. My suggestion is minor in something that is going to make your more "attractive" to employers. |

The specific skills you will need are all electronic and completely interactive. Marketing and advertising (for now) are very web based. It is all about how to drive traffic to your website. Search engine optimization and keyword advertising will be very important to you.
On the other hand, if you know how to create a compelling direct mailer that gets prospects to respond, you have an advantage.
With all the hype about e-commerce, many of the traditional forms of marketing are still very effective. |
